I would 100% want the technician to drive my car during the PDI phase, My tech noticed the battery cable was rubbing against the pulley. How else can you figure out if there is driveability issue with the car ?

The tech doing my PDI is Corvette certified & will be driving my ZL1 to make sure that everything is as it should be. He also works on the dealership owners high powered Hennessey Camaros. A good tech knows his stuff and is PRICELESS. If you have a good tech, tell them what you want & trust them.

You guys put too much faith in the dealership techs! They know no more about the sounds and handling characteristics of the new ZL1 than you do. If they do have to test drive as part of the PDI, at least demand a ride-a-long! For me personally, if I shelled out 60K for a new car, NO ONE would be test driving it!

But dont sweat it dude! Best of all is that you will have a brand new rear end covered under warranty. Just keep an eye on it when hitting the Drag Strip or Road Track.

Also curious how much and how quickly a ZL1 rear end can be obtained these days. We've had our eyes on this one for a while as a good SS replacement. Come to think of it, I had a strong smell of leather when I left the dealer... maybe the seats needed replacement...

Test drive is apart of pdi. Different dealerships have different length requirements. Last one i worked at was 10 miles and on used cars we usually went further for obvious reasons.

they could have been broken in depending on how much time they spend ont he rollers at the factory. Is that published anywhere. OEM's have differet rules than aftermaket because they don't require a low mile fluid change and most aftermarket sets recomend it.
If he could break the gears on a PDI drive he did you a favor as something was wrong IMO. proper gear break in is drive for like 10min. stop for 30min. the run they do on the rollers at the facotry would have heat cycled them some. every gear manufacture has a similar recipe. most requrie a 10-15 min drive. a cool down period. most like a change in 200-500miles of fluid. Most recomend not towing in the first 250-500 miles. so wills state no full thottle until say 200miles but nobody that races does this. how are you going to put 200miles on a bracket car. some sets will tell you do do power pulls after the intial heat cycle. that is why I have always felt this stuff odd. which is it baby it for 200 miles or heat cycle and then do some 3/4 runs and call it good. usually circle track will say 5-10 moderate laps then go for it. I have put in 5 diffferent brands in my time motive, richmond, FRPP, precision gear, and yukon. they all were similar and none of them required more than 1/3 of 1500 miles the owners manual talks about in this car.

I'm just saying I want to be IN THE CAR so I can make sure my 60k worth of Ultra-Grin isn't being mistreated... by anyone but me that is, and only after she has had time to get all the metal shavings cleared out by an early fluid change. OK, that's not all I'm saying. I'd prefer to drive. He can ride with me for the test. I'm kinda possessive that way, at least about this car.

I understand about being possessive of a car but I would never want the dealership to not do a proper PDI and I wouldn't hold up the PDI process just so I could be the one to drive it during that process. I would say the odds of the rear going out because of abuse is higher than winning the mega millions lottery. The odds are probably better that they have an accident in the car. |

I see both sides of the story. A good tech can be a lifesaver, but there are some techs that did not even bother to remove the spaces from these ZL1s. I know a lot of people wanted their cars to stay in QC rather than have their dealer do recalls. All in all I think it was just a bad part. If a few more owners have the same issue than I would question it a lot more.

If they swap out the rear end, just be sure they replace it with a new ZL1 rear. Half joking. Half not.
