I agree that people should never text and drive, but the laws banning it have had the unintended consequence of actually increasing texting-while-driving accidents in many places, because as it turns out, a not insignificant percentage of the population is hopelessly stupid.

You see, many who text while drive have not stopped where it is banned. They are just holding the phone below the belt-line of the car so the cops can't see it. Thus, instead of having the phone up with the road in the background of their field of vision, they are holding the phone down low with their floor mats in the background of their field of vision.

Make hands free devices illegal, and some people are liable to crouch down on the floor of their cars while driving so no one can see their head/mouth moving.

And I will guarantee you that, given the mentality of most drivers here in this state, they still will not give a shit. They care about themselves, and for the most part, have bad driving records to begin with. Funny thing is, I see some really moronic behavior on the highway almost every day and spend my driving time trying to stay the hell away from them. They just do not know or simply do not comprehend or give care to the implications of their actions. I also would bet in a heartbeat that DPS and local police will not enforce this law. I've witnessed some really scary aggressive driving out here with cops right there in the same area, unless they are totally blind, they just do nothing. Once in a great while I will see some moron really piss off a cop and he'll tear off after them, but mostly, they just look the other way.

Here's the next thing, these cars aren't cheap. Thus AZ (a many other states) should require HIGHER limits for insurance coverages. I heard of folks getting totaled out of cars that the other driver's insurance company will only pay out up to 25K for the claim. We have to insure ourselves against them, and our rates are therefore higher because of the higher un-insured/under-insured motorist limits we must purchase.

You know, in my mind, a "car" is a multi-thousand pound weapon in the wrong hands.

Ever have that thought, "I wish I was a cop" ? I know I'd be a real prick. Oh, and in an un-marked car as well. Marked DPS cars out here are known as "Pace Cars". As soon as they turn off the highway, the fast and the furious race is balls to the wall.

I'm sure that's the same in every state where it's illegal. Talk/text on the phone until you see a patrol car, then hide the phone, pass the patrol car and go back to chatting/texting.

Good God, man. That driver was probably dumbassing it up, but in his/her defense that snow road didn't help.

I learned quite awhile ago not to do this. I love the hands free in the car becuase I have improved noticably on my driving. I am like a baby and get sleepy easily while moving in a car. Talking to people reduces that. I wasn't going to go aftermarket for hands free sets in my last car to do it, so it was a requirement when I got the camaro.

I hate it myself !! Here in NYC I mostly see the females(a few men I see at times) on the phones- be it texting or talking. It's illegal but what are you gonna do cant catch everyone. So they'll continue to do it until they get caught. In the meantime you just have to be a smart and safe driver for yourself and other drivers. That's all !!!
