Escort 9500ix fixed radar installation
I should be betting my ZL1 next week and one of the first things I will do is get an Escort 9500ci radar detector hard wired in. I have had several of these and they are the best thing - but in some previous installation, I have wished i could have changed some locations after a little experience - so I am starting this thread with hope of some feedback from some who may have already done this or for those who do later. Specific questions:
1. Where did you have the display mounted and are you pleased. 2. Where did you put the interface buttons and again do you like that location 3. How did you mount the laser shifters in the front (and do you have a front license plate installed or not) Any pictures will be greatly appreciated. AMMEND - I started this with the wrong detector listed, I am actually looking for info on the 9500CI - which is permanent mount, not the ci which is a windshield detector

Is the ZL1 that different for this sort of topic? I would think it's still very similar to any other Camaro when it comes to this topic.

Ok the CI might be a little different. But I would still look for that same install on the SS or v6. That's prob. all that's out there at the moment.

In my search for my Valentine 1 I found nothing specific to the ZL1. We have mounted the V1 to the mirror and are currently researching how we want to hard wire. Our history is with Corvettes where we have just run the wire underneath the molding to the passenger footwell fuse block. 1st choice will be to go right into the mirror wiring. We will see....
Your setup is much different. Janet |

The CI is built into the car, more stealthy, not as easy as the Valentine 1 or 9500ix. They can hang from the mirror and use stealth cord to the mirror for power.

That is correct. Once you cut something to mount the display, it is there forever which is why I was hoping to get some feedback from those who have done it before or to help those later. The buttons are pretty much just attached with double side tape, so it could be moved if you decided you don't like the location. The detector is great. I have had them in trucks and corvettes and it is definately the way to go other than the cost!

I pretty sure you're the first with one going into a ZL1.
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78725 http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=105295 These might have some install info on them from non ZL1's?

I am doignt the same but after research I am finding out that the 8500ci is just as good, the only difference is two miles. 8500 see's 3miles and the 9500 sees 5. Do not have proof just the dealer I am usings opinion.

There is not a "built in" option with the 8500 series. The 9500 ci is built in. I have a 9500 ix that I use some in rental cars and it works great, but I think cops look for radar detectors and give automatic tickets if they see it, plus I have had a window broken out to steal one. The built in works great, gives you laser shifters front and rear and no one can see it.

Well, I am wrong again. I just checked the escort web site and they do have a built in version of the 8500 and it is less money. I am still going to go with the 9500 because it includes the options I would want anyway and have to add to the 8500 and I would just as soon put in the best if I am having stuff put in the car.

I am having the 9500ci installed this morning on my ZL1. Because the front grill is a different shape, mounting the laser shifters are trickier. The horizontal slots in the grill only allow for certain locations to have a clear line of site to the road.
I am mounting the display above the rear view mirror (in the blacked out area) and the control will be mounted right below the gear lever.
