Not to sound dumb...

Can someone tell me what a resonator is and is there a benefit to remove them?

The resonator is one part in exhaust systems that works with the muffler to reduce noise, by making sound waves "cancel each other out". The "exhaust note" is an important feature for many vehicle owners, so both the original manufacturers and the after-market suppliers use the resonator to enhance the sound.

Typically, if you remove the resonator, its going to make your cars exhaust system LOUDER.

Other than changing the sound, will it damage the car at all? Would it be too loud if these are removed?

There's no way it'll damage anything on your car. Your exhaust will sound different, louder, that's it.

"Too loud" is relative, it'd be too loud for me, for you I couldn't say.

its not going to damage anything.....as far as being too loud? its all a matter of perspective......too loud to me, could be not loud enough, to the person next to me.

How easy is to remove these if I install the exhaust and drive it for a few days and decide its not loud enough?

Really what you want is headers, a 'resonator delete' wont replicate that sound. The sound will be "sharper" for lack of a better adjective and slightly louder, it wont sound "better".

Headers will sound better. Buy a set of short tube headers if you want sound. They'll give you a nice "growl". I cant think of a "cheap" way of doing it... wish there was.

EDIT: Example http://www.andysautosport.com/chevro...l01012907.html

EDIT again: ...and you don't sound dumb, ask anything you want. People that pretend they know everything are the ones that sound dumb.

Are you talking about the resonator on the exhaust pipes under the car on the L99? That thing is huge, but it is supposed to reduce the AFM noise. If you take it off, and don't tune out AFM, it's probably going to sound terrible.

Is there a benefit in going long or short tube headers? What size would you recommend

The long tube are more HP gain, also deeper rumble. I'd take to experts in the mod section here before buying any and make sure you know what sound/HP you're going to get because they're pricey and I'm not an expert.

L99 Bolt on, Exhaust etc: http://www.camaro5.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=11

A lot of good info in that thread specifically: http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21289

Same question I was about to ask.. I now have a slp loudmouth II but I still want it to be a little louder.. I see this big thing in between the cats and axle, I think its the resonator. Im planning to take it out but replace it with what? Im not yet decided on headers because it might void out my warranty.

If you take them out, it would be replaced with strait pipe. After researching some, I recommend leaving them in

Warranty.. lol... "everything is under extended warranty except, Glass, Lights, Breaks, Steel Panels, Paint, Fabric, Exhaust .." etc so basically my car? No thanks, I'll keep my money because I'll need it for Glass, Lights, Breaks, Steel Panels, Paint, Fabric, Exhaust etc

Oh yeah... my point was your exhaust is not under warranty anyway. And you cant be denied a warranty claim unless they can prove your mod caused the damage, by U.S. law anyway, it's part of your Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Don't let the dealer try to bullshit you as to otherwise.

Long tubes will be the best for gains. Supposedly, short tubes don't do much at all. The reason why is, the stock manifold is already pretty good. It's the cats that are restrictive. I would either do long tubes, or just get some hi flow cats. They will give great gains and better sound.

Unless you guys turn off AFM, I would not get rid of the resonator.
