I have already gotten a few chips around the wheel wells that weren't noticed until I had it detailed. I will be getting clear bra installed ASAP to help minimize further damage.

I don't think the rocker panels give you all that much protection IMHO.

I've actually found some chips from this in the gills on the rear fenders. Does anyone know where to get some of those clear protective wraps for this area of the body?

Advise to ZL1 owners, especially BLACK ZL1, install clear bra to cover the gills area of the rear fender as soon as possible! It happened with the SS and it will worse on the ZL1 because the stickier tires. The front tires will pepper that area with debris. Sooner or later, you will have hundres of tiny paint chips. If you don't protect that area, I guarantee, in a few months of driving, you will wish you listened to this.

Just try to keep it on roads without much debris if possible, that's what I aim for. But other than that, I get more joy out of driving my car rather than keeping a show room clean car. Hate me if you may, but I just think it's silly.

..good advice. The wheel and tire width will definetely attract debris from the tires towards the body. Theres no way around it with the configuration. Get chip and dent insurance offered by the dealership when you finalize the deal. My dealership offered such a policy.

This is a very disappointing issue. I noticed the same thing on our ZL1 and that was just within 50 miles or so. I have just a few tiny chips already on the quarters near the rear. Why wouldn't GM put the 3M in this area? They did it on the HHR. Really strange, surely they seen this while testing. The tires pick up EVERYTHING on the road.
NOT good.

Welcome to the world of super-sticky tires.
![]() With the added black aero pieces, chips could actually be minimized...but I am noticing the inner lip of the front quarter panels taking a beating from the crazy wide front tires. Those will have to be repainted in a few years with heavy driving, I'll bet. My best advice is to stay clear of overly dirty roads...or if you have to go through something...go slow... |
