The picture doesn't show it, but as I recall the top couple inches still show when it is in the down position and is the display for the radio and climate control. I think that adds some cool points to weigh against the way it looks when it is up.

To each their own, personally I prefer that set of headlights.

I'll admit, the thing that distracts me most on the road is an attractive car.

by the time you add in the extra wiring, screen, and hard drive, probably a couple pounds. Its not as if its a mainframe computer getting shoved into the trunk. Its sounds like the system mostly integrates existing systems into a controllable and user friendly interface, rather than the existing black box (or boxes). The only things that are heavy in electronics are subs, motors, and batteries. Actual circuit boards weigh next to nothing.

Indeed. I passed this BEAUTIFUL '69 Charger the other week and I gotta admit that had me plenty distracted for a bit.

lots of people are doing things like this - putting 7" touchscreens in their car and hiding an actual computer inside their dash cobbled together from parts bought at the computer store and power supplies obtained on mp3car.com (sorry for the plug) and having their radio / everything else controllable via the computer.

INCLUDING a few plug-ins that ive seen to control HVAC using the same comptuer. (with a few wiring changes and a USB/Serial connector)

just so you all know...if gm did this it could launch a new industry in the computer world lol...

-- edit --

i know a guy that put this kinda setup in his ion redline. he could control all his stuff, from radio to cd/dvd player - volume control, GPS - wireless internet built in...he even had the HVAC controls and software that would show him his guage readouts (Coolant temp, speed, tach, mileage, trip, fuel econ, etc) on the 7" touchscreen he put in. created a custom fiberglass bezel for it even. looked slick. cant wait for him to help me put my carputer in

I think the new GTR has something like this.

i *also* know a guy with a 4th gen v6 (3.4L). he managed to put in a 7" touchscreen into his camaro, and cram the entire mainboard/cards/CPU behind where the radio used to go. all in all computers arent heavy, the cases that hold them are - and when you venture into carputing you use different components than what you use at home (Becuase its not in an area that is accesible to being kicked or having things spilled on it...doesnt need to be as robust.)

Its a nice concept. there are plenty of camaros that have carputers in them already, if you do a search on google for carputer, and mp3 you will definitely turn up some good information.
