After you come to a stop the first time it only downshifts into 2nd and continues doing that as you drive. Manual mode still functions just like an automatic in "D" until you use the paddles. So when you select "M" the tranny still operates just like its in "D" but with the "sport" shift patterns. Once you use either one of the paddles then it selects the full "manual" mode. But to get into 1st gear you have to manually select it with the paddles.
The more I drive my ZL1, the more I believe that the 6L90 starts in 2nd gear when in M. It's a completely different car at launch when you paddle it down to 1st. This may be contributing to the slower times, since it's not obvious the trans is starting in 2nd from the lack of an indicator on the dash. One way around this would be to paddle shift down to 1, launch the car, shift to D and back to M to take advantage of the higher shift points. When I go to the track I'm going to use this procedure. I wish someone would datalog the car at the track and confirm the 1st or 2nd gear starts in M.

Or get a tune to eliminate the ridiculous way GM set this tranny up.

I agree dkg11. Heat will impact much more upon trap speed (horsepower) than it will ET.

There's a huge difference because first gear is a 4.03 and second is a 2.36. That's quite a big difference and plenty enough to be able to tell if you're starting in 1st or 2nd. Manual trannys have a 2.66 and 1.78 in the first two gears so there isn't as much of a pronounced difference. And it was confirmed with the CTS-V's well before the ZL1 came out so it is in fact starting in 2nd gear. But there's no need to try and shift back and forth because manually shifting the car you can take it to redline on every shift yourself so "sport" mode wont be any better or show any improvement. The computer will always short-shift if you let it decide where to shift even in sport mode. Use the shift lights and paddle that badboy yourself. Much more fun that way.

There's a reason why they programmed it this way. Emissions, fuel mileage and daily drive-ability for the average driver. If you let 580hp start in a 4.03 first gear every time there would be a lot of people wrecking their cars that didn't know how to handle it and it would be a PITA to drive for the average person. My BMW 740i starts in 2nd gear and I'm glad is does. On the CTS-V and ZL1 they at least gave us racers the option to shift into 1st and utilize the power that's available. Once my car gets here I will see if I can tweak the TCM using EFI Live and force it to start in 1st gear. Wasn't able to do this on my Duramax but might be able to on the ZL1. Some of you tuners need to tap into the TCM and let us know what you find.

All Corvette automatics start in 1st gear. I don't have a problem with drive-abiltiy or wrecking. Well then again, I'm not the average driver! I think the more likely reason is your first two reasons.

Im guessing that would void the warranty? Ide try some better tires next time just to bump the time down and see what shes got without digging too deep.

The Vette's don't have a 4.03 first gear. I'm a Vette man as well so I'm with ya. And it is primarily because of emissions and fuel economy. But yeah...imagine the average housewife, who's never driven a car with any kind of power to speak of, getting behind the wheel of 580hp with a 4.03 first gear and a 2.36 second gear then dropping the hammer like she's in a minivan or Suburban. Think I would like to ride in the backseat and just kill myself laughing.

Yes, 06 automatic vettes and newer do have a 4.02 first gear. And start in 1st gear.

That's the only way the automatic ZL1 is going to 60' a decent time! The factory converter is probably very tight just like the Corvettes. A stock converter in a C6 will not 60' better than about a 1.80 with stock weight and with any amount of tuning. And that's in decent air.
