I've nothing to hide, or did any thing wrong. It just seems to happen now and then. I know they are just doing their job and all is cool. I was asking if others noticed it too. Not a debate over rights or anything like that. I actually support our Law Enforcement and the active search of criminals. Just saying it never seems to happen in any of my other vehicles. Wondered if others did too.

Many LEO agencies have License Plate Readers, cameras attached to the roof of a patrol car that run every license plate. You have no right to privacy when it comes to running tags by a LEO for any reason.

Plus it's stored in a database "somewhere". Talk about invasion?...I asked my brother about it (he's a LEO), and he said "yep! I can log in, pull up where you've been and even see a video of your car." He jokes his wife about knowing where she's been and when. Talk about !!!
Its not a real time video it just a log of where the vehicle was scan. It doesn't track your movement.

They can run my plates or pull me over all day. I have nothing to hide. It actually makes me feel a little safer knowing that they can scan every plate with a camera on the roof of their cars. Good way to catch people with outstanding warrants, etc.

Heck, you want to spark a debate, in AZ people are fighting the whole “Pull you over for reasonable suspicion” because one particular race fells they are being discriminated against, since AZ’s illegal immigration problem is so high.

There is a camera installed at the Wrightsville Beach NC Bridge that takes snapshots of plates and runs them automatically as you come on the island.

Here is an older article about the technology, etc.

We also have a local unmarked Camaro (v6) that patrols the area. It's very nice.

It's on the outside of your vehicle

It may not track your movement per se, but if you get checked by enough officers in enough spots for a long enough time period, you could build up a pattern and be able to predict a general area the person will be at a given point in time.

/Paranoia

Anyway, back on topic. It's kind of scary how far technology has progressed.

MMC,

I have a question about your plates. I see those dark blue, and orange NY plates down here in Florida all the time. They don't have any expiration date on them, so how do the police know that they are current? Just asking....

How many cars do you see with tag frames? I'd guess at least 30%. Granted, most cops won't pull you for it but, if your a habitual drunk driver, it's a valid legal reason for them to pull you and check things out.
Do you mean license plate frame? If so, it's same for NJ. I got a ticket for having a frame because it covers about 25% of "New Jersey" and "Garden State" on the top and bottom...so stupid.

Arghh, this is the reason I lost my PBA card two years ago. Stupid DUI checkpoint on a weeknight and I was passed inspection.

We have two stickers on the windshield, one for safety and emissions and another for the registration. They change color every year so its easy to spot the expired ones.

It depends on the type of motorist checkpoint. Roadblocks, as they are referred to by the courts, fall under what is known as a special needs exception to the 4th Amendment. The special needs exception requires that the primary purpose of the search/seizure be for regulatory, not law enforcement, purposes. Under this theory, things like drivers license/vehicle registration checkpoints pass muster because the purpose is to ensure motorists have complied with state licensing requirements. And, if there are observable signs of other wrongdoing, police may also gain probable cause for further searches at this type of checkpoint.

DUI checkpoints require more though. When police officers extend the checkpoint from checking licensing with passive observation for signs of intoxication to actively testing every driver for intoxication (e.g. flashlight tests, simple cognitive tests, etc...), the purpose has shifted from regulatory to criminal enforcement.

A checkpoint is not a traffic stop. While it depends on the state, in Texas, a person is required to furnish their license on the request of an officer while operating a motor vehicle on a public roadway. Therefore, the checkpoint, primarily, is designed to ascertain whether the person is legally operating a motor vehicle. And, if the officer has reasonable suspicion to believe a person is intoxicated, he may perform a F.S.T.

BTW, that is an intersting User Name....

Being an LEO myself I will say that running plates on people like you guys ( guys doing nothing wrong for the most part lol) is actually more of a good thing. This is how we locate more stolen vehicles then any other way. So its really good pratice and someday may recover one of our prized possession. Its all in good faith. We are not out to get you, but would love to be the LEO that returns an owners stolen C5 because I ran the plates.

MMC, Thanks for the response. I guess the cops know that in whatever State you're in, because I see a lot of them down here.
