Honestly if they want to get an increased fuel economy across the board try to make a competition out of it, first company to get a v8 with lets say 35-40mpg is contracted back under the military, (Rise of the H1? haha). Every 3 years have hat contract run out and see who has the newer higher standards. Lets say in 3 years you get a v8 with 32 mpg hwy from GM three years later ford introduces a v8 that gets 38mpg hwy, by contracting them as a short term reward a competition should form.

This hypocrisy frustrates me more than the new CAFE standards.

The truth of the matter is that fossil fuels are finite resource. As a global community dependent on fossil fuels, we WILL have to find other means of energy to fuel our vehicles and buildings.

But, there is still going to be a market for high performance automobiles that manufacturers the world over are going to want to fulfill.

Necessity is the mother of all invention. If there is a glaring need for something, it will be created.

Battery technology still needs a lot of work, but the potential is there. And it puts power to the tires more efficiently than any gas engine as it does not need to "wind up" to achieve full power.

I'll miss the loud exhaust sounds of a gas powered engine though.

Amen!! Now...

According to the "experts", the beloved bovine is the main source of greenhouse gas on the planet.

So, vegetarians everywhere, I call on you to stop eating oxygen producing plants and have a steak.

Doing so will help stop global warming. Oops, I mean climate change.

The only thing that really annoys me about the CAFE standards is the #. 55mpg in an age when most cars don't get 40mpg? 2025 is only 13 years away, how in the world do they anticipate meeting those regulations?

I can't imagine them doing away with the v-8 engine. If anything, they will improve them. I just think they need more time to make the engine cost effective for consumer sales. That's why they are focusing on switching what they can to 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder turbo engines. People want that sound of the V-8's and electric won't cut it.

The whole topic is a black hole. You have one side of the governments mouth that says CAFE, CAFE, CAFE, while the other side says spend, spend, spend because there is QUADRILLIONS of dollars to be had in the oil industry. What's hypocritcal is the fact that the Oil industry is the business that essentially pays the salaries of the government officials screaming for CAFE standards. The oil business isnt going anywhere because its provides millions of jobs internationally... You think our unemployment rate is high now? HA!

At the end of the day, do I personally believe they will do away with the V8? No. Will you have to pay a premium or a gas guzzler tax to own one? Probably. So I guess I'll just hang on to mine until I can no longer get gas!

one thing to note about the new CAFE standard is that they are using a different set of tests to figure out a cars CAFE MPG than the tests that eventually go into figuring the EPA MPG numbers that end up on a cars widow sticker, they have always ended up lower. also, companies that do, or have done, better than the CAFE standard in other years can apply the credit later (or even sell them).

Yes, but if someone gets out of line at my house I can't just page back and make it go away. My point being that there isn't anything on a thread that I'm gonna let bother me. So I don't really c the point in some of the rules. With that said I still follow them, but that doesn't change the fact the I feel some of it is a little overkill.
