That last mph or two is going to be very slow to come by, slow enough that you won't feel it building or see it happen on an analog speedometer. Your desire to step up to Y-rated tires is commendable for other reasons, though I wouldn't consider a W-rated tire to be particularly inferior in your application. Either way, put emphasis on the performance aspects of whatever tire models make it to your short list. Things like tread pattern and other appearance items are no higher than secondary considerations or "tie-breakers". Just as a matter of general tire knowledge, tires of H or higher speed rating include what's called a "cap ply", where tires of lower speed rating do not necessarily include this feature. There's one other thing you need to consider. It is possible for the 155-ish speed limit to be dictated by things other than tire speed ratings. I've heard where driveshafts fitted to base models elsewhere may not be reliable at the driveshaft rpms required for 140+ mph. I'm not saying that the 2LT is speed-limited for the same reason, only that it is possible. Norm Last edited by Norm Peterson; 09-28-2012 at 08:29 AM. |

When are you planning on taking this thing to the Salt Flats? That is what I presume you are doing here right? Other than that, I see no reason. Also, like others have said, your 6 will never sniff the limited top speed. Dropped from a plane and reaching terminal velocity maybe...

These cars don't have any front downforce and start to get light and float at speeds above 155, The ZL-1 has added downforce so they were able to raise the top speed on them but they start to get light around 200 mph as well. One of the last Hot Rod issues had a little more info on this.

Everyone is saying the V6 wont hit the speed limiter.. im pretty sure there are some videos on youtube of guys doing it in V6's acceleration got prettty slow at the higher speeds tho like someone said above. Not that i will be drivin that fast, Im a mechanic so i see too many blownout tires and broken balljoints and tierods thats all i think about when i get above a 100 lol

I hear you about suspension component failure while driving. Couple of times, I've been very fortunate that nothing worse than the one thing breaking happened. The last time I topped 100 mph was out on a road course, and I won't do that kind of speed anywhere else.
For "proving" something like this, I'd take most videos with a grain of salt. But a slight downgrade, together with an unusually "strong" engine and perhaps a tailwind could make the difference (especially that tailwind!). You'd still have to have tranny and axle gearing that's pretty close to optimum. Norm |

I have raced my camaro in the Silver State Classic open road race from Ely to Vegas 3 times now. Last year we had another fatality caused by a blown tire at 180 MPH. All fatal crashes to date are a result of tires blowing. This is a great place to find out about tires, ratings, correct sizes, Etc.In their tire tech area. If your $400 a piece tires are over four years old, they wont pass tech. I have no clue about the car begining to "Float" at 155. Thats just cruzing speed relazing. |

It's true, the SS is designed to create lift and not down force at speed. Only the ZL1 is designed to create down force.

A custom tune can be removed and put back in as needed if you buy the equipment/program. Make sure your ONSTAR vehicle diagnostics is expired
or your busted. I have a Garmin GPS and a cell phone. No need for ONSTAR checking on me like a spy.
