I'm shocked at all the people here that are totally fine with SURVEILLANCE equipment in their vehicles.
Sheep to the slaughter.

Did I miss something? All the article mentioned was police officers observing the driver from outside the car. Just like any other traffic law violation. Surveillance equipment in your car without a warranty would be unconstitutional.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that texting and driving is dangerous but...
If you think about it, this is pretty funny. Chevy only added the Bluetooth option to the most expensive options packages for their cars. They don't give a damn about adding technology for your safety and no one is going to pay extra to not be able to use any function of their phone. They wouldn't even consider it. Now smartphones call tell when you moving and and be programed to shut down the SMS function of your phone while moving but how would it know your not a passenger in a car or bus?

chevy added bluetooth because of hand free mandates. otherwise they would never have added it because it takes away sales money from OnStar pre-paid minutes. It's something GM can't get thru their thick heads.. no one wants or uses the pre-paid onstar minutes, it was a great idea back when cell phones were newer technology (mid 90s) and not everyone had a cell. But today it is just out dated technology, and GM is only now getting into the game with MyLink. But even that lacks a lot of ability that others manufacturers have had for 5+ years. CA has a hands free law too, but I still see people day in and day out yakking away with the phone on their ear, and the sad part is they are driving vehicles that I know have BT standard, but they are too stupid to read the manual to know how to set it up. Personally I think all cell phones should no longer have the ability to be used without BT or wired ear piece. personally if I wasn't required to have a smart phone for my job, I would get a basic flip phone and only use it for emergencies.. I hate talking on the phone to begin with, and there is never a conversation that can't wait until I am in a private place settled in be it at my desk or in my home. Nor do I see the need to have a conversation via SMS. I use it yes, to tell the wife I am on my way home, or to ask her what she needs if I am at the market. Having an conversation via SMS, IMO is just dumb.. But I know I am the minority. --- as for the article about surveillance that is even more dumb, a complete waste of taxpayer money.. it's very simple to me, make the law state you can't use the phone PERIOD while the vehicle is moving, and be done with it. SMS, GPS, whatever makes no difference, they are all distractions while driving PERIOD. Then they can ticket to their hearts content when they see the damn phone in someones hands.

Even the hands free calling can be distracting. I was riding with someone the other day who was bluetooth talking to people in a meeting/conference call while he was driving on the highway. After a couple near misses almost ass packing the cars ahead of us when traffic suddenly slowed... I suggested maybe traffic is a bit heavy for a conference call. Probably sounded like a phone nazi, but I was just interested in getting there in one piece.
So many talk about hands free as the safe way to drive and phone... not from what I have seen. Kind of like texting might be a 6 drink DUI... hands free maybe only a 2 drink like impairment... but their mind is still not clearly on the road. Both hands may be on the wheel, but part of the brain is off chatting in space. |

Drinking and driving is illegal yet people still do it and endanger themselves and others, while I agree that it is ridiculous that you actually have to pass a law to have people not text and drive I also have to wonder where and when it ends? I mean when will the law be passed that forbids you from eating a cheeseburger while driving, or taking a sip of a beverage? Do you think that auto manufacturers should remove cup holders? Really the bottom line is that you can't fix stupid.

i actually see this at work quite a bit. im in the military, so whenever someone does something stupid, we have training and new requirements made in order to have some sort of resolution. and quite funny, this creates more inadequacies and gets more people in trouble. the usual description of a sailor is rowdy, foul mouth, and drunk. now, you better not think of getting a dui, your career is over if you do. i completely agree, where does the line get drawn with rules in your car. 10 years ago, not wearing your seatbelt wasnt a big deal, now it is. 10 years from now, like it was said, no eating or drinking in your car. thats why ive been saying for years once i retire, im moving out in the middle of nowhere. this is aggravating that people have to make new laws/regulations just to justify their jobs not realizing that they are assisting the gov't take control and micromanage people's lives.

Quoting SSBlack: Peeking into people's cars is pretty low tech and kinda creepy if you ask me. Out on the interstate, they probably saw some strange things. How do they crack down on cellphones/texting and not crack down on make-up applying, talking, eating, or changing the radio station? They can crack down on all of those with Careless Driving tickets, but I'm betting those are rare. You can't even stop drinking and driving with all the laws on the books and harsh penalties, breathalyzers in cars, people still do it. You can't stop stupid until stupid kills someone else with their stupid actions and stupid goes to jail. Seems like I've heard that before. People don't read threads, they just comment. No offense. |
