If it was normal they would all do it.. and they most certainly do not. I have never had to add oil to mine in the last 1.5 yrs. I just change the oil when the life meter indicates it is time.

Commits weekly crime
|
I did a moderately hard break in. Tender with the car most of the time, with a few WOT moments like when getting on the freeway...so 2-3 times a day on a daily driver.
I -never- burned oil. At least, not in the amounts you are talking about...I'm guessing after 4 oil changes (at 8000 miles, 16000 miles, 24000 miles and 30000 miles), maybe I've burned 1/4 of a quart of oil? if that.

kennyo, I would have to suggest for you to get an oil consumption test going with your dealership to properly document everything you're claiming just so we know whats going on with the vehicle and for to better be able to assist you. I would also suggest that get into contact with our Customer Assistance team. They will work with you and your dealership to keep you up to date on the status of your vehicle and steps being taken to resolve this issue as well as assist you with working with your dealership as well. I hope this helps you and if you need any help or would like me to get you setup with Customer Assistance feel free to message me and I'll do what I can to assist you.

I realize this is an old post but thought I would chime in. I recently purchased an Imperial Blue 2010 RS/LT2 with 6 speed manual. 6300 miles on the car at purchase and I ran it to 11800 when I began hearing tapping. Checked the oil to find out I was 3 quarts low. It's at the dealer now beign torn down to determine if they will repair or replace. I was told by the service dept that 1qt per 2000 miles is normal. Had I realized that at the get go I could have avoided the breakdown. I doubt many people think you need to replace the engine at a second oil change. I realize 5000 miles may be a bit more but all my miles are highway. I don't baby it but also don't beat on it.
After reading this post I'm still not convinced so much burn is acceptable after so many years of making engines. Assuming I get a new/rebuilt I will keep a better eye on this. Suggestions or comments? |

1 qt per 2,000 sounds crazy to me! IMO deffinately sounds like something wrong with that motor! I had a 2005 Monte Carlo that drank oil too! I asked the dealer about it and they said 1 qt per 3,000 was normal! It ran good and kept it for 5 yrs and 80,000 miles! Now we have the Camaro and no more oil chugging! Hope everything goes well for you and you get it staightend out! |

Okay, back to real things.......oil consumption: when Cadillac came out with the 4.6 Northstar V8, many owners were calling GM over the oil consumption, about a quart every 1,000 miles. Standard response was that was normal for the engines. About 95% of the owners of these cars with the NorthStar were retired folks who had time to check their oil and weren't hotrodding DeVilles. One nice gentleman stated he may as well never change the oil, just the filter and keep adding oil. I didn't have a good answer for him. |

Having personally built many engines for my classic hot rods.....No that amount of oil usage is not good at all, you must really be having trouble due to the synthetic nature of your oil not allowing the piston rings to seat and you may want to dump your oil for a 3000 mile period to change to good old regular oil so you can get the wear and break in the parts need. And a oil catch can in you case would probly be able to refill your lost oil........... I know the zl1 owners complain about the lack of the rings seating and its more crucial for them what with fouling the superchargers internals. I just traded in a 2011 vert for a 2013 coupe and I never had any oil usage or I would have worried like you and changed to a regular oil to try to get the thing to seat well and had a certified mechanic going over it with a friggin fine tooth comb, usually catch cans are good for higher mile engines that the rings are gettin worn with scratched old bores that lost thier cross hatch from the machining process and are wearing, Good luck and allways check your oil with the engine cold on a level surface as the upper valve train on cars can hold alot of the oil, and checking it warm only gives a false reading.

This is why so many Catch Cans are used on these cars. I had the same problem. I drain My Catch Can every fill up. Some people say thats too much but I have been doing that since the car had 4k on it.
Rather catch the oil in the Catch Can than have it throught the intake. Hope that helps. I was in the same boat and other than draining each time I fill up, all good. |

And no, should be very little oil consumption during changes if the engine was broke in correctly (driven hard the first 500 miles) and the rings seated properly. Do a search on here anyone that wants accurate oil consumption info and the causes/cures.
