No red dirt in this area and the car has NEVER seen rain.

If it is a shock gas issue, is the shock supposed to vent gases?

About the die release agent. Has this been confirmed anywhere and does anyone have more information about this?
Struts dont vent gas. If it did vent that would mean you have a bad seal, and strut would
stop working . That would leave you with just the spring, and no damping. Ride would be very bouncey. Atleast on the side with the staine.

^^^ In this thread, today, I guess i started the Leaking Gas" theory..
NOT what I meant. That would imply a broken Strut and that is not the case. But it has something to do with normal compression/expansion of the struts and the hole in the strut tower under the hood.
Please keep in mind, I did not have this looked in to, someone else did so I am going 3rd hand (?) ....

Will search for post where I got my info from - I believe it was a 'vert..

I can tell u 100% that its coming from the rubber on top the strut. I have a beautiful 1999.5 F550 larit crewcab done by Fontain Modifications in hunter green and from day 1 when i picked it up when you open both front doors near the top door hinge there are the same stains in the paint from the rubber gasket or foam whatever it is around where the mirror bolts too the door on the inside. Its on the cab and the doors can also tell u atleast on mine i got much worse has not pealed yet or anything just gettin darker id say from chemicals in the rubber.....sorry for the typos im on a phone lol

Not a stain from the rubber on top the strut ....

Here is the Thread;

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...t+tower+yellow

"believe its a heat issue on the clearcoat."

(post #93 is a good post)
Hi, I think i know what is doing this to the towers, HEAT, if you have removed the struts you will find a large rubber dampener that sits on the under side of the strut tower, it moves with the suspension up down and side to side, and heats up the tower, That makes you clear coat start to burn, and that is what you see, the way to test this is with a laser temp gauge and see how hot it gets there as apposed to any other part of the metal under the hood.

Drago77; (post #1)
..... I'm getting a yellow discoloration (both sides). It startes at the base of the rubber and radiates from there, fading as it grows. Likewise, the small "vent" hole that is near that piece does the same. Darker at the opening, fading as it travels away .....

Drago77; (post #18)
As for the strut towers- the service rep said he spoke with the body shop manager and he claims its caused by the shock gasses escaping when the car hits a bump, and it's discoloring the clear coat. They said they won't repaint it (which I don't blame them) as it will just come back. At this point they have no solution for me.

(knew I wasn't crazy ! but everyone calls it B.S.)

Drago77; (post #29)
Talked to my service rep- he claims now, the discoloration is either the shocks or the tires, and there's nothing he can do. I asked for a manager. service manager comes over, and immediately I have the urge to shove the stick even further up his butt than it already was... He listens to me, tells me #1, Chevy didn't produce this car to be a show car, and not to tell them it is because that's not their concern. Then he proceeds to tell me #2-it's "normal wear and tear" and he had a co-worker go check his mothers white camaro coupe, and it had it too... they "all do".

Draco77; (post #31)
Magically, the service Rep calls me back today, tells me THEY called GM tech yesterday after I left and there's not a single similar issue to mine reported, and NO Camaros engine bays are clear coated. He then checked a few in the lot, and low and behold- they're clear coated...

End result is he told me to bring it back-to-back they'll repaint/reclear the engine bay.

Augie1978; (Post #35)
I had the same thing on my SIM coupe, put a small peice of black electric tape over it to stop it. I thought if you could insert a little black rubber grommet in the hole it would fix it

pacer1GH; (post #45)
Opened the hood on my 2011 pace to see if mine was doing the same thing, sure enough turning brown all around the shock towers. Could not believe it. I have only driven it 367 miles, has never been wet except for when the dealership washed it before i picked it up.Looks like something is bleeding through into the color, maybe rust. build date 3/28/2011. And yes it is clear coated,i think all verts are at least all the ones i have seen are, but i have not seen that many.

Baba; (post #57)
..... There's a brownish gummy residue under (and) around both strut tower caps. ......

^^^^^ That is coming form the Black Rubber Strut support ^^^^
(it is in direct contact with the rubber material)

Drago77; (post #59)
..... car looks good! I did a quick once over with a microfiber rag and didn't feel any overspray. Body shop super said they dropped the shocks out and removed the brace to paint completely with no lines. ....

(apparently got his repainted under warranty)

Fungi410; (post #65)
Hi, I also have the brown discoloration around that little hole on top of my shock tower. Both sides with 555 miles on the car. Just thought I would let you know.
Mine is also clear coated and I live in South Florida.

TOPLESS; (post #66)
WE were cleaning my summit white today and mine has the discoloration on both towers. We have to take her in next week for a problem that sounds like something is rubbing on the front end and will ask about the discoloration.

babaron: (post #70)
..... Mine are definitely discoloring more now. .....

gglefty; (post #72)
..... Mine is definitely showing the discoloration on the struts, and a few people have commented on it when they see the engine. Time to take it in!

cgager1970; (post #73)
I have the same exact problem, and it is getting worse too! I've personally cleaned it many times but now that I know it is not just my car the dealer is getting a call.

Drago77; (post #76)
Bad news guys.... paints doing it again... more so on the driver side this time, and very widely spread... will bring it up to the dealer again when I bring it in Monday for the top. What a PITA!

I do see where the rubber is rubbed off from the top but a cleaner wax takes it right off. More of a surface contaminant than anything.

Smkymts; (post #88)
The day i picked it up, it had yellowish discoloration in the same area of the strut towers. The dealship had no ideal what caused it. But since it arrived from the manufacturer that way, they assumed it was how it came off the line. I never did get a answer I liked.

SSGirl; (post #90)
I'm having the same issue with my 2011 2SS/RS ..... I have taken it to the dealer and they took photos and I have not heard back from them as of yet. I will post a few pictures of it. Mine are pretty bad and it is starting to do it on the underside of my front fender as well. I have 2 other SW 11's in my club and they are doing it as well... UGH!!!

Mike70; (post #96)
I have the same issue with mine, 2011 Vert, also white with 11K miles. I have painted MANY cars, this is not surface contamination as it will not compound off, this is heat discoloration which would explain why you only really see it on white. Its from the friction of the strut mount underneath the tower. The only soloution to it is to topcoat the tower with high temperature white paint and not clear coat it. That should solve the problem. It does not really bother me too much as I don't show the car, but thats how I plan on solving the issue when it gets bad enough to annoy me.

Theres no way !!!! Heat from ???? U need friction too cause heat well theres not enough movment in the steering too generate that and it would do it just driving down the road..... Well if what you say is true then i should be able too saw on the wheel a few times and then pop the hood get out and if what u say is true i shure as hell am not goin too be able too keep my hand on that tower for more then a sec or two. In order for it too cause paint discoloration it would have too get pretty dam hot and i myself have plenty of experiene in that dept. Im a 12 year vol firefighter and ive put out tons of car fires and it takes a decent amount of heat and there just no way for that kind of heat too get generated there.

As mentioned before - I AM NOT SAYING ANYTHING - just answering a question from cprsac that is having the same trouble as I am with information I found right here on Camaro5.com.

I do not believe you nor I could say with 100% certainty what is causing the discoloration but the problem is there, from the factory on mine and several other "Summit White" clear coated strut towers. There is no real pattern and unless someone see's it in person, one does not really know how bad it is.

That front kit does look great. I wonder if this only effects the white cars or is it on all the colors?..

SSYNRS, thanks for the reply and the link. I appreciate it!

I still can't believe this discoloration issue has been going on for years with no resolve by GM.

If there is a GM rep taking all of this in, please acknowledge. We're not violent just pissed because it is obvious this is not a maintenance issue and we care what our cars look like. Please give us some input.
