Two Bits of GM News

http://www.leftlanenews.com/gm-consi...reen-logo.html

and

http://www.leftlanenews.com/house-bi...-chrysler.html

OK so on the first item, besides it being ugly, I don't see how basing your logo based on some passing socio-political fad reflects a culture of long-term planning and success.

On the second point, this is exactly why government control of GM just won't work. The government knows absolutely nothing of business. They only know how to pander to monied constituents. The government wants to negate one of GM's biggest bankruptcy advantages just to put some lousy crooked dealers back into "business". I weep for our nation's future.

“Car companies have used bankruptcy to run roughshod over state bankruptcy laws,” LaTourette told Automotive News.

You gotta be kidding me!

thoughts on first item: I agree with the ugly point. Unless they do it in good taste...though I'm not holding my breath...it's hard to make green look attractive on anything, imo.

On the other hand, the "green movement" is FAR larger, and older than the mpg war brewing within the auto Industry, and personally, I see very little wrong with being environmentally responsible (besides the enviro-fanaticism that is unfortunately associated with the movement). That said, over 40% of GM's plants are 100% landfill-free, and they have one of the largest solar panel arrays in the nation, if not the world (and are building a second, to my knowledge). Coupled with other enviro-friendly projects the company has taken on, I think the color green and it's recently associated meaning suits them.

second item: If they're smart...another thing I'm not holding my breath for...they'll stop buying into these bleeding heart stories that a FEW dealers are telling, and abandon, or delay this legislation.

Hey I resent that. Green is my favorite color, and you better believe my 'vert will be green if GM really does offer it as the rumor suggests. I just don't think it looks good for their logo. Maybe I'm so used to the blue logo, but I'm just not feeling this one.

I like taking care of the environment, and I recognize what GM has done, but the term "green" just has an air of pretentiousness to it. To me "Green" means having a Prius - filled with environment-wrecking batteries - shipped over from Japan on a cargo ship spewing pollutants.

And with the dealerships, no doubt some of them were good businesses that are now hurt, but it doesn't change the fact that GM dealers over-saturate the market, leading to cutthroat competition that leaves the dealers ill-equipped to provide good service and pursuing whatever meager profits they can get at any cost. A right-size dealership network allows remaining dealers to be more profitable, reinvest in their service and facilities, pursue sales less aggressively and less deceptively/unfairly, and allows GM to weed out the jerks. The government wants to save jobs in the industry, but they have to realize that it can't be sunshine and puppies for everyone. The industry is oversized, and unless they want to subsidize a huge, wasteful, overstaffed industry, some people need to find new occupations, or else everyone will be dragged to the bottom.

and .

Like I said in the other thread...I think I'd like to see a steel, or some sort of machined silver color instead, if they feel the need to change it at all. Green...mmm...I dunno.

And I'll just reserve judgment as to whether GM's new culture will follow that of prius-driving, air-"cleaning", ozone sniffing, tree-hugging, pretentious stiffs. But I doubt it.

GM is no longer a "car" company, it's simply a jobs program.

Two things that are currently highly annoying on this site:

1. There are three or four threads about the same exact damn topic that need to be merged.
2. The freaking GM haters on a site based around a GM vehicle.

I agree with you but it's not nearly as bad as it is on other sites. Kudos to the mods here.

I can only answer for myself, and not the rest of the "freaking GM haters", but, quite frankly, just because I am not "GM loyal until the end..." like some people, it does not mean I'm a "hater" of any particular brand.
