Exactly. It feels colder because it is a better conductor of heat. It removes heat energy from your body more readily than the pillow. It's all about what material more readily absorbs and transfers heat energy.

I do agree, however, that once you're intake air velocity is high enough the material is irrelevant.

k&n isnt always metal.. idk why people keep saying its a hot air intake. the one i have is plastic and doesnt get hot lol and works just fine. i got it for free but i think the VRAM intakes look cool too. but when i buy a different intake im going to spend the money and get the carbon fiber Roto-fab, my uncle has it on his ZL1 and it looks amazing. but if u can get a k&n for cheap do it u wont regret it but if your going to spend the cash go with CAI or a carbon fiber roto-fab

I do not doubt that CAI may make a "better" intake, but I just put a K&N Blackhawk on my SS a couple of weeks ago, and I could not be more pleased. Significant performance increase, didn't have to relocate the washer fluid bottle, have had no CEL, and it's a dry filament, so I expect no MAF issues. Again, we all know CAI has an elite product, but I am very pleased with the Blackhawk.

I started doing some research on this. Anybody that has a cold air kit needs to watch this:

When it comes to intakes buy the one that looks the best to you. I've had the cheapest and I've had one of "the best". Both perform.

I have had the exoerience in owning a K&N too. And yes at first, I thought it was great! It changed the sound under the hood, and I felt a noticeable difference. It wasn't until I started tracking my car when I saw exactly how bad it was compared to my current ADM Race Intake. It's DA BOMB!
So if you just want a feel good mod for a cheap price, then K&N will satisfy you, but if you want to get the best bang for your buck, spend the extra $150-200 and get a good CAI that will really perform.

How is our CAI sucking in air from the engine bay when it is completely enclosed, insulated, and sealed off from it? The only place it can pull air is from below in the inner fender well, which is the air outside of the vehicle. Same location the stock set-up pulls its air from.

It also needs to be said that there is much more to the design of these things than an air filter on the end of a tube. The tube itself (thermal properties aside) plays an important role in the flow characteristics of the intake air. High-end intakes have a great deal of R&D to solve the temperature and flow issues encountered with a stock setup.

Also, the electronic controls for the vehicle in question play a part in the effectiveness of a CAI. Some engine programming pulls a great deal of ignition timing based on intake air temperature. Some vehicles don't. In our Camaros, it's very important to feed the coolest air possible to our engines for the sake of more ignition timing, which equates to more power.

I actually experimented with my own setup. On a hot day (90*F), I did some datalogging, with specific focus on the IAT (intake air temperature), and the ignition timing.

Stock: 123*F IAT @ idle, 115*F IAT @ 65 MPH, ignition timing @ 18* adv.
CAI: 114*F IAT @ idle, 105*F IAT @ 65 MPH, ignition timing @ 22* adv.
CAI w/ scoop: 115* IAT @ idle, 90*F @ 65 MPH, ignition timing @ 25* adv.

They work well on our cars. K&N vs CAI? Haven't owned K&N since my Mustang days, so I can't say. I own CAI, and it's a high-quality, high-function component. $399 well spent, IMHO.

It all depends on what you consider "significant". My Halltech yellowjacket gives a independently documented significant performance increase (12-14whp), doesn't relocate the washer bottle, has never popped a CEL in over 3yrs of owning it, is a oiled filter (flows better than dry), zero MAF issues, has a HUGE velocity stack, and is all one piece composite intake tube (inreases laminar flow).

Compare your intake to mine, then tell me which one would give more significant performance gains. It's all about perspective.

i really liked the performance gains to be had with my Halltech. had it installed for a year or so. i recently (3 or so months ago) added a Apex scoop and washer bottle relocate. However, recently switched from a Halltech to an ADM Race intake, mainly due to the poor construction (i felt) of my halltech. it just seemed flimsy. now my ADM on the other hand feels very solid, looks great, and i havent noticed a change in performance at all. so i would say the ADM and the Halltech perform the same. so for my money i should have gone with ADM in the first place.

Wow I bet it never reaches the same temperature as the engine bay then even though it's IN THE ENGINE BAY! 😝

Come on man. Numbers have already been posted. If you're going to start a fight... at least pick something that hasn't been disproven already.

CAI, Roto-Fab or Airaid would be my top choices. Feel free to call, PM or email me anytime with questions.
