Shift Points in the 1LE

Just noticed one day that this had become my shifting pattern for normal around town driving in the 1LE... I average about 14.5 mpg and drive this way about 90% of the time. If there is a series of stop signs on a neighborhood street I'll take off in 2nd.


01-20 1st gear
20-30 2nd gear
30-40 3rd gear
40-50 4th gear
50-60 5th gear
60-75 6th gear

01-50 1st gear is for the other 10% of the time.

That's funny I find myself with basically those same shift patterns.

I'm shift similarly except my percentages are different... almost reversed. lol

Mine are quite a bit lower and I would say I try to accomplish close to:

0 - 15 1st gear
15-20 2nd gear
20-28 3rd gear
28-35 4th gear
35-55 5th gear
55+ 6th gear

Houston is very flat and I live and work downtown so there isn't much change in gradient for me either, and I don't know how possible the above would be otherwise.

I don't pay attention to what gear I'm in at speed I just know I only shift after 3000 rpm. On the highway I only use 6th gear if I go over 70mph. It is really a dog until about 80mph. I can probably count on 2 hands using 6th gear. My rolling average over 3000 miles of driving is 15.3 mpg.

I don't really pay much attention to the speed of the car, I shift it by the exhaust note, lol. Let's just say that the 1-4 shift indicator has only come on maybe 2-3 times since i've owned my car.

My habits are almost the exact same! I might end up shifting just a tad later than you though. And I almost always start in 1st unless I'm still rolling. I get around 17-18 mpg. I wonder why there is such a big difference but I would guess that you are having a little more fun than me lol. Keep it up! (especially that 10% lol)

i never even think of shift points. I can tell you one thing....you aint getting to 0-60 in 4.3 seconds if you're shifting 5 times. theres is zero pull in 6th and i still find myself putting it in 6th if im in steady traffic at 45-50 mph.

I'm in 4th often and commonly go 1-4 without being forced to.

I do think my driving habits are a bit different because i dont have a daily commute and traffic in my area is f'ing horrible.

you got to remember these gears overlap quite a bit. you could be going 45 mph from 2-6.

Plus I like to get to legal speed as timely as possible

The key word in the op was normal... sometimes I will use first as a slingshot and then cost to the next light.
