I believe the black "intake part" you see is also a cover .. right?

I believe thats the intake itself.

The corvette uses two covers for the side of the engine and yes, there already is a black cover in the center of the engine over the intake which cannot be removed so perhaps it is not viewed as a cover by some. (edit: apparently it can be removed, I just never tried..lol) The Camaro essentially has two covers if you look at it that way while the Vette has 3 covers spread out so they do not overlap..

I feel its like running with a blanket on the engine, air flow is very important for the long run, the corvette engine has it right.

I think its a covering over the intake which apparently can't be removed ... if you look at it, you can see it isn't really "part" of the manifold (ala Ford 5.0).

Here you can see where it isn't the bare intake, but some sort of cover .. look at the right of the intake (runners).

What are those strange looking boxes coming off the 90 of the air intake pipe? Is that to reduce noise?

Yes, those are baffles to reduce noise. They came stock on my '02 as well. Very restrictive.

My Challenger had a cover on the engine and I thought the same thing about it holding in heat, so I modified it to let the heat out, yet still look good.

You guys can probably figure out something similar to have the best of both worlds:

Well spank my ass and call me a red headed step child. So they added a piece to the intake! Well, we will see about that GM!

Thanks guys. It's pretty easy to do if you have a dremel, some spray paint, and patience.

I'm sure something close could be done on the Camaro cover.

Here's a shot of it mounted:
