This is just me, but I'd get the car tuned and enjoy the heck out of it. I doubt you would have any warranty issues later, but even if you did, you'd still be driving the car you've been dreaming about. I wouldn't let perceived concerns about warranty keep me from my car. But, that's just me.

Yeah, something is fishy with the way GM is handling this situation.. I wish Fbodfather would be able to chime in on what is really happening behind the scenes as he obviously knows about this situation and how many complaints and so forth GM is getting about this issue.. It is hard to ignore being a member of this forum for as long as he has been..

Scott,
Does Alabama have a lemon law? Florida's lemon law works pretty well at getting the attention of the manufacturer. I had issues with one of the wife's cars a year ago and they kept giving us the runaround until I filed. Still didn't get the issue fixed but I got out of the lease and got every penny back. Rick |

When you say you CC Scott on all emails between GM and yourself, who is "GM"? Some sort of tech or engineer? CS? John? Just curious.

Well this is the chance you take when you buy a first year new model car. Was your honda accord a first year model? It seems to me the people that preorder cars should be aware that it might not come out 100% flawless, and thats the chance your taking in order to have the "hottest new car out". It would be nice to have your cake(tons of attention and thumbs up) and eat it too (0 problems) , but in real life that rarely happens.
Just dont go acting like your japanese car maker is better because it never had these problems. Look at the Tundra guys when that new model came out. The camshafts exploded under acceleration and the tailgates bucked under a small load. Guess what, my silverado never had any of those problems... Dont get me wrong I do feel bad for all this BS your putting up with and I agree they should get you a car that works as adverised. Last ditch effort for me would be to buy a new PCM and get one of them tuned and use the other for when you have service. It would be a nice deterent for them knowing its tuned, and i doubt they would check for it without any suspicion, besides how much has the warranty helped thus far?

I can only imagine how frutstrated you are. But in my opinion, as long as GM is still trying to fix the problem, I'd try to be patient and see what they do to either fix it to spec or replace it with one that is. If they fail at either, that's when I'd go lemon or maybe sue them to provide what was advertised.

Heh, made some good points, but that's the most salient one right there.
I guess Scott's working on the principle that he can neither afford to mod the car into what he wants nor afford to pay out of pocket if, say, it throws a rod out of nowhere as stock. That's a hell of a conundrum, I grant you, and my personal opinion is that all things considered it wasn't the right time to buy a new performance car, but I can hardly blame a guy for trying. That's not the issue we're talking about here, though; he's feeling betrayed by the powers that be, having been failed every step of the way so far. This is a bad situation for everyone involved; the dealer sure as hell isn't going to eat the car if they can't in turn get reimbursed for it; the GM rep either doesn't know how to proceed on his own or doesn't have the power to do what's right; and the farther up the chain we go the easier it is to either run into red tape and holding areas or people who, even if they mean well, are doing jobs that take into consideration tens of millions of dollars' worth of vehicles at a time and simply don't have individual resources. Apparently there's a team within the Camaro division (is it even its own division?) or project team that's tasked to dealing with these first-year issues, as there ought to be, and it's that shop's Rolodex I'd be beating down doors looking for. With the company's finances in the state they're in, however, I can imagine this QA (or whatever) team is not composed of folks whose sole responsibility is to the Camaro product, in all likelihood these people are forced to wear a huge number of hats and are probably working on a six-month backlog of exploding Cobalts, right-turn-only Silveradoes, and Malibus assembled without driveshafts. Their bosses are probably telling them to focus on the work that's going to save the most face and cost the least money, or to drop everything else if there's any chance the problem might end up on one of those awful news-magazine TV shows where Ralph Nader shows your granny just what her corpse will look like when she tries to do a J-turn at 100 in her Yukon. Notice, please, that I have not identified anything so far as a valid excuse. So somewhere out there there are folks dedicated to the task of investigating and solving problems like Scott's, but he just can't seem to get a hold of them. The Nader Granny-Pancake Channel isn't interested in exposing one of their primary advertisers for something so un-trendy as one of those evil, loud, obnoxiouis sports cars not going fast enough; they only bite when they can scare people, and slow cars make them happy. Maybe if this is andeed an exhaust problem, and the L99 can be teased into behaving mean enough to, say, blow the exhaust apart at the cats, you could take it down and fail an emissions test and THEN those leeches would grab onto it under the auspices of the current enviro-terrorist trend. Who else do you go to, other than the countless local and national sports and muscle-car communities (to whom you can probably warn against buying L99s, but not get anyone's attention) and internet forums? Well, you might be able to tease C&D into checking out your particular car, but chances are pretty slim, especially with the new management around there. You might get a letter in on Backfires, but unless there's a big bunch of you and sufficient uproar you're not going to see the kinds of investigate-journalism screeds about crappily-built cars they did many years ago. R&T, if anyone still reads it, might be desperate enough, but chances are they're far more interested in John's LS9 Camaro swap than Scott's poky L99. Motor Trend, I think, only ends up in dentist's offices, but Hot Rod might take the case. If exports were more on the mark I'd bet you could eventually get some press in GB's Top Gear mag, but the enthusiast community across the pond is still pretty content considering any American V8 sedan in strange and distant revere as the uncivilised but hallowed forbidden-fruit they have for the past forty years. To tell a British audience that GM can't assemble their improper cars properly would hardly register as a gaffe; suffice it to say no letter-writing campaigns would ensue. I could go on for another ten pages about how hard it's going to be to unleash hell on GM to punish them for what they've done, but I'll conclude by suggesting that even though the threat of media attention is nebulous enough to be worth a try, the problem is we're not all in the same boat as Scott and rpepka and irpq; if we were we'd have the resources to really make a dent. We need to get the word out to the folks who don't frequent this forum, who also might have slow L99s, who may not know it, and we have to get concrete evidence that these cars are underperforming dramatically across as large a testbed as we can establish. It's going to take time, and energy, and days off and things we'd rather not invest time doing. Or perhaps, if we're lucky, some guardian angel at GM who can force attention on the issue and prioritize it before the current leak turns into a gash and bleeds them of real money. |
