Thanks for the info! I'm still shocked to see little speciality store around like your company. It's surprising to still see Advanced auto, O'reillys, autozone, etc all a stone throw away from each other. Then you have the big box stores selling in bulk quantity prices. How do you guys do as far as margins?

I can really speak only for the 3 local stores I've worked for. All within a couple miles of each other. It really depends on the location. I had one store do huge amounts of business on the DIY side, probably busier than a Walmart. Another that is slow with DIY and busy with commercial, and a third that was average with both. I can't really say numbers due to company policy, but in my area, we crush the competition.

I'd go to an Advance Auto over a Walmart any day. Nothing to do with prices - I just really really hate their parking lots & checkout lanes. I go to Advance Auto, tell them what I'm driving & a few minutes later I'm out the door. (Granted there are a few short bus folks I've run into at these stores when trying to find a part - but fewer % than the ones at the super stores).

Right now the oil change specials for Advance Auto are as follows:

$21.99 for 5 quarts of conventional castrol with the house brand driveworks filter. $1 upgrade to Fram and $1 more than that for purolator pureone.

$23.99 for castrol high mileage/synthetic blend with purolator pureone filter

$31.99 up front for full synthetic castrol with Fram ultra filter, $29.99 after rebate.

$35.99 up front for extended performance synthetic castrol with Fram ultra, $33.99 after rebate.

$19.99 for quaker state full synthetic with driveworks filter.

$45.99 up front for royal purple with Fram ultra, $43.99 after rebate.

Anyone have any clue why it's so much cheaper?
Wal Mart buys in huge quantities, and gets a discount, resulting in lower prices. Same stuff, just cheaper.

Any reason why you just can't buy another 5qt jug and use a qt. or so from there? The jugs are clearly marked in both liters and quart increments. And you can double check with the dip stick. Individual qts. of oil for Mobil 1 are almost $8 a qt. at Wal-Mart.

As for the Mobil 1 jugs with Wal-Mart label markings, Mobil 1 sells about 40% of all their Mobil 1 oil via Wal-Mart, so that is worth the labeling.

I am also using Mobil 1 in my Subaru Outback which has a 4.2 qt. capacity. So I buy the extended 15,000 mile Mobil 1 for $26.99 and a Napa Gold filter as they never have platinum.

Anyways, I only put in 4 qts and when it goes close to a qt low, I add that and boom, got a 25% oil change, ha. I have gone 11k miles per the first time with it and blew the $25 for Blackstone and they stated to let it go another 5k.......................
