I wouldn't screw with a hernia if I was you. How old are you? If you are doing it for overall health there is a million other exercises you can perform to obtain your goals vs placing yourself at injury. I work around all my personal training clients injuries. It's also possible that the pain your feeling if from scar tissue being strained depending on where the incision was made. Do you wear a belt. That can actually cause discomfort from the pressure of the belt

I do lift regularly with the exception of a hand full of injuries, another motorcycle accident mid 09, took about 5 months off, several times since then a couple of months off for other injuries, mostly stitches for cuts. I've had more stitches than you can count. My strength levels have increased steadily, I started out squatting a mere 105 lbs, now I can do 3x12 @ 235, benches are a weak point due to the broken clavical, started at about 90 lbs now at about 175, deads were at about 125, now 300 but this is one that I think I have more in me but am limited because of this issue.
What I meant was were you lifting right before the hernia. Doesn't look like it. So hernia was 1998 or so? So right after there was constant pain, then it subsided to just when you lifted or twisted a certain way, then it went away all together. Then you started lifting, no pain to begin with, then pain starts coming on as the weights have gotten heavier and only in the deadlift, above the knees.

Is this a somewhat accurate summary?

Almost. The cause of the hernia was lifting a glass table top and then trying to rotate it for alignment purposes. I wasn't lifting weights at that time. I think it was in 2001 or 2002. Lifting from knee height(partial rep deads) is not currently a problem, it's doing full reps, the start of the movement lifting off the floor is what does it. It's mostly at 275 and upwards, 300 is killer.

I would say IF the pain you are experiencing now is the same pain you had in the start its scar tissue. If not see a different doctor. I would encourage you to try the sumo stance first. If the pain is the same buy some squat briefs and see if it helps.

I've not discussed it with my doctor but if it persists I will at my next physical, if it is scar tissue I'll work through it

I'll do some research on form and technique on sumo squats and give it a shot

Thought I'd be the only one working out today, guess I was wrong. Lol.

I tried a couple of sumo deads with lighter weight, they didn't feel good at all so I started again with semi stiff deads and hit 275 with no pain, I'm going to try to work my way up again and see how it goes.

Today was crazy, I over ate big time and was going to blow off my workout because I was exceptionally bloated but hit it anyways and hit a personal best on squats, don't it figure.
