No not normally. Stress cracks normally happen do to long run times under inflated or over loading the tire, as in having a tire not rated for the load of the car on the vehicle. The other problem could be found in the manufacturing of the tire or just the way the tire was designed. Now the reason Goodyear tells use not to run our tires in cold weather is because as the temp drops the rubber they used to make them become less flexible and thus makes the sidewalls very stiff. This is what leads to the problem we would probably see on the 1LE or ZL1.

Just saying it is a good fall back plan it dealer gives you a hard time about replacing them. I know goodyear tires and I put warranty on them as soon as i got the car to cover this kind of problem or even road hazard 100% though DTC. Also with the finish of the wheel make sure they have someone that knows what they are doing to not jack up the wheel.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll post what my dealer says when I get there... If not I know a guy at discount tire so I'll be heading there! Also I should point out my car was out doors at the rail yard dec 19th-jan4th and on a trailer for 5 days with close to a dozen days below 0 so I believe that's when the real damage was done

Good to know, thanks. My car is sitting in the garage as we speak (waiting for spring, unfortunately). I will make an effort to closely monitor the tire pressure on my ZL1.

No way tires don't crack, there are no issues with these tires, that is ridiculous!!!

At least those were the remarks (OK, maybe the above is exaggerated) I received when I posted that I purchased different wheels and tires for when my car was in storage.... It is -8 outside.....I am happy with my purchase

Good info ss1LEtx,

-Matt

They absolutely crack, but this forum does seem to create the persona it is a common thing. Eh crack, but it's still fairly uncommon.

Yes, they can and have. They can happen under any circumstances

Age
Hard use
Temps

Tires crack

Extreme cold wether increases chances of cracking. Driving in the same weather increases the chances more.

We see this same issue with a lot of our race tires during the winter. If we keep a few sets to have for testing we have to make sure they stay inside, preferably in a dark spot out of the sunlight and never below 50 degrees.

They don't have to be on the car, they don't even have to be on a wheel to crack either....so just something to be careful of.

Now at the same time, I don't know how this effects the GoodYears but on our slicks we could still practice on them and they were typically fine. Never would introduce that tire on the car for qualifying or a race..but practice they were always fine. I would suggest keeping the tire if it is still under warranty but if you have to go someplace and that is your only choice it should be fine.

All summer tires have similiar issues. Drives me nuts this gets put in the gm/Goodyear bucket of problems.

Bad traction and cracking in bad weather is summer tire issue. If theses summer tires worked well in winter they would be summer tires, they'd be all season!

A summer jacket isn't going to keep you warm in the winter just like a summer tire isn't going to give you good performance in the winter
