When I lived out in the sticks (AKA open country) I utilized the tap shifters all the time for several different reasons, I liked to keep the car in 6 gear when just toolin down the highway for basically seeing how high I could get my fuel mileage up to. And time when I pass someone I loved manually shifting down instead of relying on the car to do it for me automatically. But I really got a kick out of my shift buttons when it came to the twizty turny backwoods country roads where I would realy open her up and have fun.
Now that I live in Vegas those days are gone, and I dont use tne shifters as much, basically only when I want to pas someone or if I am demonstrating the shifters to a friend.
Thats the beauty of the shifters.......they are there if you want/need them, and if you dont then all is good.......

They are also used now in Indy cars.
And they are sequential, the operator cannot go from 5th to 2nd for example.

AFAIK Indy Lights still have a shifter on the side of the cockpit. Some are upside down. I'm not sure on formula 2.

I can't remember saying automatically as that would be a lot easier for them. Also not sure about formula 2. I think formula 3000 used sticks years ago but I don't know if they changed it already.

It actually doesn't turn the AFM off. If you coast in a lower gear in I think it's 3rd you will hear it come on. The reason it doesn't come on as much because when you are shifting, it isn't matching the computers low RPM gas saving shifts so it stays off assuming you are driving fast

It does deactivate the afm...when I first get going..once I have to shift in 3rd gear in manual mode I quickly gear down into 2nd. Then I gear up to 3rd. This will keep it from coming on again until you go back into drive. It's handy on the hi way for long trips. Use the paddle shifters up to 6th gear. Gear down to 5th ..then back to 6th. It won't come on again. You can deactivate in any gear by just downshifting the shifting up again

I haven't driven without my RANGE so I don't recall what gear it was but in my car, even driving manually, my AFM still kicked in if I was coasting at a certain speed. Never did that down shift-up shift idea though.

I do not have this system, but I do have some questions. In our '69 drag car, we have a manual valve body turbo 400, and you can upshift or down shift as you please. That means you can downshift and pop the motor just like letting the clutch out without rev matching. Does the Tap Shift system do that? Does it rev match on the down shift, or can you do that manually? I guess I find it a bit useless if you can not rev match on down shifts (either by it doing it or the driver), but it very well may do this. And if you only want to drag race, it might be a great choice since you only would be up shifting.

It doesn't rev match on the downshift, but you can simulate that as the driver. It took me a bit to get used to it (nasty little delay in response), but it works pretty good.

I hated the afm..but I read someone posting about the tap shift here on Camaro 5. it was just a comment, so I tried it. The afm will come on using the tap shift until you downshift ..then up shift. Give it a try it makes the afm a little easier to tolerate.

I would use it more if the control was on the stick.

The transmissions are completely different between something in Formula 1, a Ferrari or Lamborghini compared to the Camaro.

Of course it is different. What I was saying is the fact that they all used tap shifts instead of sticks.

Tapshift, button shift, paddles shifters...

...they are functionally better at high speeds. When going 200mph do you want to hold the steering wheel with one hand to shift with the other? or hold with both hands and shift with your fingers with no loss of "manual-ness".

CFD on the forum sells the shifter with taps on side. I shift with my thumb, up or down. I really love the taps on the shifter. To me the taps on the steering wheel is hard to shift while turning. Happy cruising!
