It won't work... at least here in California and in my experience.. when you bring your car into your dealer of your choice, they have you sign the "service agreement estimate." There is fine print that states you the customer, give permission to the dealer / its employee(s) to "test or inspect" said vehicle on the road, highway, etc...

The driver (who is now a former employee and presumably fired for this) stole the car during off hours.

The dealer offered to help with a similar car but it's condition was notably less pristine than the owners original car. I'm not sure if they will do any more to help voluntarily.

The fault apparently goes to the thief exclusively since he stole the car by taking it outside of business hours and without permission or authority. It seems the dealer is legally not responsible for damages so far.

the dealer is responsible, they gave him permission to go into the dealership to get his phone charger.

This story has now made the front page of Yahoo. Hopefully the dealer will quickly realize that the negative publicity is NOT worth the cost of a new ZL1 and they do the right thing.
