Well, I have little to respond with to the "if you can see through the filter..." since a filter allows light through since it isn't 100% solid while not being a pane of glass...

The filter is definitely different, design-wise. Can't be certain it helps, but every little bit of airflow increase can't hurt.
I'd take you up on your offer if it's still available. I'll probably use the ZL1 from herein.
