The car will enter closed loop as low as 95* coolant temp. Thermostat has absolutely NO effect on when you enter closed loop.

So... assuming that is correct, without a tune a lower thermostat does nothing. Okay not nothing, but is best realized with lower fan settings

Does the RX require a tune modification? Also I would be interested in getting that link to your thread if you can supply it...
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=239613 no tune required it just keeps your iats down enough to not have heatsoak pull timing |

I have run a lot of laps with that a/c warning on....I just shut the a/c off and keep running. 280 isn't bad for the synthetic oil in these cars. I have been told that 350 is where you need to pull off. Really it depends on the kind of track day you are doing, If I'm out on a low volume member day I'll stay out on the track until it automatically goes into limp mode, if I'm out on a day the track is open to the public and there are a lot of cars out there I'll try to come in before the car goes to limp mode so I don't bring out the caution and cut short other peoples limited sessions. I can usually get 2 or 3 hot laps after the a/c goes off. If I reel myself in and perform all of the shifts at 5500 rpm to keep the supercharger rpms (and heat) down the car will run all day at this pace. If you just watch the tach and shift it a little early it stays much, much cooler.

Really old topic but I wouldn't start new one.
Just replaced main radiator and thermostat. I installed the Motorad 523160 with opening temp 160F (factory is 190F). Refilled 60/40 with red antifreeze concentrate. No changes at the engine coolant temp. So it remains 221 degrees maximum then drops to 208 and back. On the highways fluctuates from 176 to 199F. Fans begin to operate at 221F as it was before. What's the point of a colder thermostat if there's no change? And the fans start working just like with a regular thermostat |

What is the open highway temp and what is the ambient air temperature?

Didn't even notice that. If it's hitting 200 degrees at highway speeds, something else is wrong. It shouldn't need the fans to keep it thermostat temp while cruising in cool ambient temps. I would guess it has air trapped in the cooling system.

Can I damage the engine if I constantly drive at such a low temperature? Or is it better than the "normal" 221F? |
