Exclamation

This is how it's set up on the '07-'08 Vette. If one of our insiders could make it happen like this on the Camaro, I'm sure everyone would be pleased...

They can do that with the convertible? I didn't think it would get a signal when you have the top down. Great though.

Wouldn't that mess w/ the signal when the top is down, though? I think it would be wiser to put it in the body panel (if that's actually what they did w/ the vette....since I don't know the facts on that).

Okay the convertable is a different story. An external antenna must be used somewhere on the car. As for the hard tops they will have the radio antenna integrated into the rear defrost traces.

The '79 has it in the windshield. They look like long hairs. Barely noticable.
Just sayin'

Good point. The trucks had that until the mid-80s too.

Yes (they formed a T down the middle of the window - my Mom's 79 Regal had it). Many GM vehicles did from the early 70s till the mid 80s. That fell out of favor due to the fact back then the reception was inferior (when mated to the old analog dial transistor tuners) to a stick mast antenna. So in the 80s they switched back to the stick mast untill the PLL digital tuner and stronger signal amplification design in the receiver section of the tuner circuit made the glass imprinted antenna feasable with the same (or even better) reception as a stick mast (the thing you have to worry about is AM reception - you could use an eyeglass screw driver for an FM antenna and get great reception, but you need a solid antenna and/or signal amplifier in the receiver for AM).

Thats sucks. I don't know how they did it with the Corvette convertible, but it has no mast antenna.

My 77 Chevy Caprice Classic had it in the rear window....or was it the front? I dunno...but it should be incorporated into the panels, the window...something other than a 3 ft antenna. Like I said, I'd take a shark fin. But, I'd much rather have it in the window or inside a body panel first.

Pretty sure your Caprice had it in the front window.

The fin is not for AM/FM - it is for Sirius/XM radio and OnStar/navigation. Satellite antennas must be line of sight, which is why they are mounted on the roof of every car that has satellite communications. The AM/FM radio antenna will still be printed into the rear defrost.

My whole point to this is that GM should either make the satellite stuff optional (which they won't because they will make OnStar standard on every car now) so there will be no fin at all, or make the fin better looking.

I like silver cars. That's the color I will most likely buy. A piece of cheap black plastic on the roof is not appealing to me. And since I will never use OnStar or any satellite radio, I will remove it as soon as possible.

^What sucks is that I'm pretty damned sure we don't even get On Star here in Europe so we don't need the damn fin to start with!

Well...if that's true, then you probably won't be getting a fin.

I say screw Onstar, sign up with AAA. No stupid fin and pretty good coverage.

I mean, I guess Onstar is useful for if your car is stolen, but AAA will get you out of a technical bind lickety-split for like what? 5 bucks?

but if you ever get in a wreck and are so injured that you cannot get to your cell, OnStar calls 911 for you. They will also unlock your doors if you lock the keys in the car, give you directions when you get lost, make hotel/restaurant reservations for you, check your tire pressure/airbags/oil life/transmission/engine/etc and send you an e-mail once a month on how your car is holding up. They can provide evacuation routes in the event of a hurricane (i'm in FL) and a lot more. OnStar is a great feature if you're not too stubborn to learn about it.
