I've heard of the 3.91 gears before, what do they do exactly?

3.91 Rear end gears basically makes you quicker off of the line. You will loose a little top end and maybe some MPG as you will be at a higher RPM than stock at the same speed.

You will get to those speeds faster, but you will not have the same top speed. Unless you have a tune, you won't hit true top speed anyway as there is likely a speed limiter on the car from the factory. I have not tried to find mine, but most around around 120 or so. But I could be wrong.

Not new to LSX motors, just the Gen 5 scene.

I am assuming you mean the Texas Mile race or something like that. I would be real careful to infer otherwise.

There isn't a limiter as far as I know, I've heard of people getting up to 150ish in the v6 and I can't imagine it would be much higher than that but yeah I like the sound of the new gm gears, any idea how much they cost from a dealer?

I have no idea on cost, but there was a set for sale in the Texas Regional marketplace... you might check in there, or email that seller and see where they got them if they already sold them.

The gears are not typically a whole lot, but the install with cost as any gear change needs to be done by a real pro who can shim them correct if needed or they will grenade easily.

I blew the factory 3.42 rear end in my 99 Formula (when I had it) rolling off of a stop sign at idle. Freak deal, but a bolt on the posi unit sheared off, bounded around on the ring and pinion (gears) and threw itself out the rear end cover. That was a hell of a noise.

LG Motorsports took care of me back then. So find a performance shop you trust and let them do the install. Peace of mind has a cost.

Here's the price for the GM 3.91 gear set. Apex Motorsports and JDP are basically the same price. I'd just start contacting shops to do the gear swap.

I tried to buy the gear set from the guy selling them in the market place. He wants too much for them and if you try to offer him closer to market value (based on what three identical sets sold for in the same forum) he wasn't interested. Knock yourself out though, he is in the SA area.

rule of thumb I was taught regarding ring and pinion swap is about $1k per axle.

They're $450 and he wants $435... He may do a better deal for you since you're local and he won't have to ship.

However, before buying them contact shops that will do the work. Get prices for labor only (you provide that kit, I'd send them that link to avoid confusion.) and get prices for parts and labor (they provide that kit.) So far for me it's cheapest to buy the kit and pay Fast Automotive to do the work. (about $40 cheaper.)

Speed limiter hits at 155mph factory. You can eliminate it with a tune. From what I've heard gears do hurt on top end a lil bit but that's only above 140mph. That's my next mod

Honestly with the 3.91 or 3.45 Top speed is pretty much the same give the power we are talking. Fifth gear tops out at 191 mph with the 3.45s and 186 with The 3.91s in a 1LE. I don't really know what they would be with the Non-1LE gear swap (deferent internal gears) but it won't be far from 180 mph. Six gear is useless for a top speed run given that we are talking bolt on cars and 1-2 mile runway.

Vararam is the best intake, get long tubes, underdrive pulley and a tune. I would also run 3" exhaust and no cats.
