My dad's 582 takes 12 with an additional quart in the filter.

Oil is used to lubricate and cool an engine, and the capacity was probably found empirically to be the optimum of all factors: lubricity, life, cooling, cost, etc. It wasn't chosen at random.

yea european (think autobahn) cars been taking 8+ quarts for awhile.

I remember when GM switched the Corvette to Mobil 1 long time ago. At that time the GM engineers stated it's major benefit was cooling the engine... with synthetic oil they were able to reduce the cooling system size. That always stuck with me.

I think the main reasons are better engine cooling and longer service intervals.

Many diesel use 10+. I think Dodge the company had used 12 or so.

German higher hp machinery, bred on the autobahn, run in the 8+ range, ditto Mercedes, as mentioned above by the dude. Meticulously calculated are these oil capacities, with external oil coolers for good measure.

Yes sir. My dad's Mercedes 3.5L even has an engine oil cooler... 90 degree V6 that simulates power stroke 7 and 8 to have V8 torque with V6 efficiency. Those German's don't mess around with anything.

I know I was pissed also, it should just round up to a even 12 so I can use a whole case

Seriously though extra oil is a good thing and every hot rod I've built gets deep sump pan and remote oil filters, X2, so they have adequate oil sump. I've never blown one up so there is something to it.

I often watch oil temp on the DIC to ensure I have some temp in before jumping on it. It takes a loooooonnnng time to get 200 into that much oil.

A lot of us run between a half a quart and 1 quart lower than the factory calls far. It keeps the oil further away from the crankshaft so that you get less air wiped into the oil and keeps lifters from ticking. Here's a picture showing how much all is in the pan when it's full (8 qts).

I do the same ^^. It seems to keep the valvetrain quiet when you don't paddle the crap out of the oil with the crank.
