No worries if you run the correct tire pressure.
So what pressures do you have to run cold and what hot targets do you have? You should definitely try R7s for us and report : ))

I aim for 36 to 38 psi hot. Cold, if memory serves, is around 27 to 28 psi.

Sweet then. Would you recommend these to a newbie tracker ?

In the same document, where it talks about FWD cars with independent rear suspension, it talks about benefit of using lower min. tire pressures, and gives a formula of dividing total weight with driver by 100 to reach at the safest minimum pressure. Well, I know it's under FWD section, but if this minimum safe formula applies to us as well, it would put us at 40 PSI cold to handle 4000 lbs. It really makes me wonder if we're abusing this tire with our fat cars :P After all, Hoosier is a very light tire which comes with lightweight steel belt-line.

Perhaps I am blowing it out of proportion. I will just send an e-mail to Hoosier and ask. If this tire works for our cars (R7 315), and if it lasts twice as long as R6s (which I hope), it might be an incredible deal for us and I'd love to try a set. It is about $450 cheaper than Trofeo Rs for a set as well.

For newbies, it's good to start with a street tire like the Goodyear Supercar G2s or the Michelin Pilot Super Sports, then progress to a street-type R-compound like Nitto NT-01s (love these!) or Toyo R888s. Finally Hoosiers or slicks.

Slicks and Hoosiers (which are basically slicks) have a less gradual breakaway I've been told, and that's why it's best to wait until a driver has experience. However I find Hoosiers just fantastic at the limits, both the A6 and R6 variants. Very controllable and predictable.

It might sound stupid, but I think the reason why you found them predictable might have to do with very stiff rear sway bar you use (Pedder's rear sway). If you used something less stiff, I think you'd find them giving less feedback, but you could possibly gain a tiny little bit of time, too.

I am sooo tempted to get R7s. I will send them an e-mail now and ask about load ratings.

Do it! I would if I could.

My Camaro's in the shop so I am tracking my other car this weekend, they don't make A7s and R7s in the sizes I need yet. I'm gonna run A6s instead. They don't last long, but their grip level is just so over the top good

I just ordered a second set of wheels for street/wet track use (APEX ARC-8 19x10.5"), so now I am free to choose whatever track tire I want!

I sent an e-mail to Hoosier as well. Here are the questions I asked:
Quote:
  • Would they be a good fit on 11"-wide wheels I have? Your table says so, but wanted to check since my car is 4000 lbs with the driver.
  • Speaking of weight, what is the load rating of R7s at this size; do you think it would be safe for me to use this tire at the road course with my '14 Camaro SS 1LE?
  • Finally, many members report R6s are good for about 16 heat cycles. How are R7s in comparison?

Well, I also sent an e-mail to TireRack, and asked them to add these new sizes to their list. I need their heat cycling service : P

Useful thread thanks. I run R6's on another car (36 hot) and am interested in Hoosier's response to questions regarding R7 load rating on the Camaro. If ok for higher speed/temp tracks, and the tire sizing is correct, I'll definitely run them on the Z/28.

I got great answers from Jeff at Hoosier:

Quote:
Good morning and good questions. First, the (46937) P315/30ZR-19 R7 - $458.00 each is available and would fit your 19 x 11 wheels. This tire has a diameter of 26.1” and a Tread Width of 12.0”. My rule of thumb when fitting a race tire to a wheel is to keep the Tread Width(12.0”) within one inch difference of the Wheel Width(11.0”).

The R7 does come with a new tread compound which offers longer tread life(track sessions) and improved performance. The internal construction offers faster lap times, higher grip levels(especially in corners) and more grip sooner(heats up quicker).

Your weight of the car – 4000 lbs – is not an issue, however HIGHER air pressures must be used. On a 3000 lbs car or less, a HOT pressure of 36 – 38 psi would be used. With your car, please start your COLD pressures at 38 – 40 psi which should give you a HOT pressure closer to 48 – 50 psi.

Negative camber settings should be -2.0 to -3.0 degrees. HOT pressures above 50 psi is fine, but should not need anything over 52 psi HOT.

Monitor your shoulder wear and tread surface wear as you continue to use our tire on a road course. The R7 tires can be rotated around the car or side to side after every day of session. This allows all tires to be worn or loaded evenly through the life cycle.

Any other questions, please write me. Air pressure is key here for these tires to work on your heavy car.

I definitely intend to try these tires!

Holy cow that's a lot of pressure! I'm assuming the A6's that I'm running this weekend would benefit from similar pressures although the Viper is 3350 Lb without driver so I'll go lower. I'll see if I can get in touch with Jeff. Thanks for looking into this.
