Intake Kit Question - K&N Part No. 69-4523TP
It will be at least a month before I make the purchase of a new air intake.
I was leaning toward the CAI kit, for ~$400. It seems like everyone loves it. I was playing around with what coupons I could find for Advance Auto Parts and for Autozone, and I was able to "get" the K&N intake kit for ~$235 shipped. Who knows if I'll find comparable coupons when I decide to actually make the purchase. My questions are... (1)What are the communities thoughts on this K&N kit? (And K&N filters in general) (2)Is the CAI kit worth the $165 difference? Thanks in advance!

Yes, the CAI is better over the K&N,
Look up the thread that Ted Jannetty did a while back, he took a stock Camaro, installed just a CAI form all the major brands, and dyno'd them, then posted the results

Its not worth the extra 165 brotha. Cant tell about other Cai, but I have the k&n cold air typhoon and it works great. Talking to folks who do a lot racing that $400 CAI is the same as an $300 cold air intake. Not to much of a difference.

I couldn't open the spreadsheet at work, I did on my phone though and just glanced at it...I didn't notice one listed as K&N, is it listed under something else? (It was hard to see on my tiny phone)

My bad, I thought it had K&N listed.
I can tell you others have tested the K&N, with less than stellar results, but hey, if that's the CAI you dig then enjoy. I bought my Camaro used, already had the CAI, I just added the Apex scoop, and the Injen Hydroshield.

My thoughts exactly. I love the more aggressive tone this intake give my car. But again it is just a preference at this point. You spend a little more and you get what you payed for. Cheaper isn't always better.

Thank you for considering our CAI for your vehicle, we appreciate it very much. As far as price goes, with the case of our product you get what you pay for, which is the highest quality and most highly engineered CAI available for the 5th Gen Camaro.
Our CAI comes with a fully insulated airbox that stays sealed from the heat of the engine bay, with a removable lid featuring stainless spring loaded 1/4 turn fasteners. The lid has a filter inspection window so you can see the filter at all times. The intake tube is also thermal coated to reduce heat soak even more. The entire system is aluminum, TIG welded by hand, and powder coated for a durable and professional looking finish. It is made 100% here in the USA, and is backed with a lifetime warranty and excellent customer service. We engineer and make our own filters as well, so the whole system is 100% designed around your engine and vehicle, nothing is just a standard part from a shelf. There is no tuning required, no CEL to worry about, and no other modifications required, it is truly 100% bolt-on ready. If you have any questions feel free to call, email, or message us and we would be happy to help you. We have sponsored this forum since the beginning, and are here when you need us!

This. If, what is it, 12hp is worth 235 and the other 4-6hp is worth 165, then sure, go for it. Or just use those funds and get the intake scoop from Apex.

This is true. When I had the K&N, the imprint of the weather seal along with the dust that entered the enclosed area was clearly visible and was an eyesore when I had my hood up. One more thing about the K&N that I noticed, my car's performance felt like it was back to stock when it got really hot here in SoCal in stop and go driving. Part of the reason why I ditched it. Didn't have that feeling with the CAI no matter what the temperature. I had it installed when I did a cruise with 34 other Camaro's in the desert during the yearly Borrego Springs cruise that we have here. 110-115 degree heat through winding, hilly roads and open desert engaging in very "spirited driving" and it performed like a champ. |
