I was asking that very question back about a year ago, hoping that Camaro might have more than just Alpha in common with the CTS.

Full disclosure: I live on the side of a hill in Colorado. What could be cooler than driving your Camaro to the ski slopes?

It might equal profit, but it will also mean a significant cost/unit increase. As well as adding unwanted weight, as mentioned by brt3.

I am more and more sure we will see AWD in the Camaro. Maybe not in the SS but in the lower HP cars. Just seems to be an easy competitive advantage over the Mustang for the Northern climates. The architecture has it so it is pretty much just a decision to have it or not.

I haven't seen numbers, but most of what you see here and back home in Michigan seem to be AWD.

The Regal is now AWD too. But no Chevy car is. Only SUVs or CUVs. So this may be a simple decision to offer what is available for the architecture, but it would need to have some strategy. Something GM typically has lacked.

For me? I think it adds a great feature for those looking for a sporty coupe (Pony car) in the winter climates.

Speaking of CUVs, I sat in a Trax today at the dealership while getting the SS serviced. A fairly base LS. under $21,000. Seemed pretty decent for a base model. I'm sure AWD in an LT or LTZ would be pricey, but I thought it a decent mobile.

I'd say that it depends upon the power-to-weight ratio. The present car probably wouldn't much benefit from the additional forward thrust (at least not on a dry racetrack; public roads in foul weather are another matter altogether). Something in the realm of the C7Z06 would find the additional traction to be far more useful.

While I can't disagree about the impact upon weight or the driving experience, track times for cars like the 911 Turbo S and GT-R suggest that the upside far outweighs (no pun intended) the downside. Whether the improvement in lap times is worth the loss of perceived driving dynamics is really a matter of individual preference.

Something that would fit the character of the Z28 quite well, IMO, would be a good torque-vectoring differential. While this doesn't fully address the forward-traction issue in the same way as AWD, it would provide some substantial benefits in vehicle dynamics. Much more likely is that the performance variants of the 6th-gen will receive a similar eLSD as that used by the Vette, ATS-V, and CTS-V. While this isn't as good as full-on torque vectoring, it's still a huge upgrade over standard mechanical LSDs in any number of driving conditions.

Full disclosure - in a previous job, I was involved in the development of the type of systems mentioned above. My present interest is simply that of an enthusiast.

I don't know how this is even up for debate, as driving four wheels is way better than two on a low-mu surface - especially when the system is capable of intelligently distributing the torque. There is no "promise" to buy into; physics and common sense tell us all we need to know, and if that's not enough, then try out a good AWD system in winter weather and report back.

Of course, some people will take that additional forward grip and use it to get into trouble once it's time to stop or turn. This is the fault of the driver, not the drivetrain.
