Interceptors are nothing more than standard issue civilian Crown Victorias with heavy duty electrical, brake, transmission, and cooling systems...... they are NOT heavily modified as many would like to believe.

Run of the mill 4.6 V8 under the hood. No hot cam, no headers, exhaust, or intake mods, nothing of the sort.

Only thing I think they do is remove the top speed limiter from the ECM.

You will leave him in the dust.

All the Impala patrol car's I've seen are just V6's and made for cruising, not speed.

I will video, but will block out the car numbers on his car. I may not wait til I have 2000 miles on the car. Sounds like fun to me.

It's not the motor that catches you, it's the radio. No one can run the the speed of light, not yet anyway.

haha thats what i thought about the impalas, and i assume that they are front wheel drive. all of the county cars are either impalas or trucks.

what are the best preforming police cars?

Yeah, I retired with the state in 1998. "Some" is correct.

Flyingdog1, thanks very much. We leave the SS at home and bring the SUV. My wife won't leave until the outlets are empty and the Yukon is full.
Do a victory roll next year and I'll know it's you.

Yep, the Ford police car is lacking. When the first Lumina police cars came out (1997?), I got to witness a race between one and a CV (on a section of Interstate closed due to construction). The Chevy won handily. The last quasi-robust Crown Vic I can recall is one of the few with 351's from the early 1980's.

Yep. The current Impalas are poor performers compared to the Ford Interceptors and the Dodge Chargers.

The Chargers are the best performers - they have the 6.1 Hemi and run 0-60 in under 6 seconds. Neither the Ford or Chevy can beat it.

Problem is the Charger Police cruisers are more expensive than the Chevy or Ford. So, when it comes to taxpayer purchases, guess what wins 99% of the time....

Having said that, seeing one of the Charger police cruisers in your rear view mirror is always more intimidating than seeing the Impala or Police Interceptor.

But none of these cars can compare to the absolute ruggedness of the old Caprice 91C. I know some Cleveland cops, and every old timer misses them. The city ran some to over 300,000 miles with just routine maintenance. Let alone the fact that beast of a rigid frame construction could out pit-maneuver anything made today.

They had the good old 350..... again, no mods beyond electrical, cooling, and brakes, but they were bullet proof (not quite litterally), and the cops just loved the performance and room/comfort.

Just across the river in illinois, ive seen the illinois state troopers rolling in an unmarked mid to late 90's mustang, ive seen a late 90's camaro, and there is a sliver dodge charger that ive seen far north as springfield and as far south as cahokia, im betting its a different car but who knows

Seeing how this thread hits close to home for me I feel I need to give a little input. Iam glad to see there are other officers out there that are still car buffs and are socialble. However from my personal experience I am sure the Camaro SS and probably even the LT will smoke the Police Interceptor. The 4.6 is no competition for many of the cars on the road today. I have to agree the LT Caprice, or B4c Camaro police package were great but the Ford has not been a true Interceptor for years. You are right its not much different that the street package Crown Victoria. Now the Dodge Charger on the other hand with the Hemi 5.7 would probably be a closer match to the SS and would be a show I would love to see. Maybe when I get my SS I will let you know how that works out. As far as price goes, there is not that much difference, goverment pricing between a Crown Vic and V8 Charger was only $800. I have driven Police Interceptors for 20 years now and the past two years we have had Chargers, I will take the Charger any day. That is till the Pontiac G8 is rebadged as the Chevy Caprice and they make it a police package.

Here is a pic of my "office"
