But does that make this sound abnormal?
Yes I agree, I do not believe everything GM tells me either. But my distrust doesn't prove anything about the design or whether or not the noise is a sign of an actual problem.

My new 2014 Manual SS has the often talked about "Backlash" clank shown in the Information Bulletin #03-07-29-004I Manual Transmission Operating Characteristics posted in this forum. (Bulletin issued Dec 19, 2014). Seems to be on the excessive side in my opinion. Brought in to the dealer in January. Transmission expert and I test drove together and I demonstrated. He then was also able to easily reproduce the clank. Deemed it in normal range for the Camaro Manual SS.
And was told he hears it close to that level on all Manual Transmission SS Camaros he has looked at since first year of production. To be diligent he then put it on the lift and hand-turned the tires and we listened ... definitely from inside the transmission and play in the gears (turning and rocking tire back and forth). Almost no noise from the differential (and very little free play), and ZERO noise from the split driveshaft bearing or huge rubber coupler areas on the driveshaft. Sudden loading and unloading of the rubber driveshaft couplers (and clutch springs as noted in earlier post) likely transfers that energy in a jolt to the transmission gears causing them to clank. (Read that Tremec TR6060 has greater clearance/tolerance designed in to gears due to expansion when driving it hard in sporty type cars). Next, he then checked the fluid level, it was warm so some fluid dripped out when plug was removed - factory did put plenty in. The tech even checked torque on driveline bolts and all was in spec. They did a great job looking everything over on the driveline. I've driven many manual transmission cars but none where the clutch engagement happens so quickly within what seems to be 1 inch of travel of the pedal and so high up from the floor. But I see the strategy in design - it does allow for extremely fast shifting. Over the past six months I've slowly altered the way I shift and at which rpm's; that has helped reduce the clanking a great deal - for me it is impossible to eliminate it completely. First to second gear shifting well under 2,000 RPMs does make it a lot less noisy. Ron |

As far as I can tell the ZL1 does not experience this issue.

Happens on my LS also. If you abruptly push the clutch in. I have learned to slowly engage the clutch when driving at low speeds. Drivetrain slop.

100% of the noise is in the clutch. I just put an aftermarket clutch in that does not have the springs as noted in my earlier post and I no longer have the noise.

Normal, mine doesn't exactly like being lugged around under a thousand RPM's, and will clunk everytime shifting to low RPM's if I don't let my clutch out slowly
Just a quirk of the 6060 |
