A local Buick friend of mine just posted how his motor is getting the black goo too. His research says it comes from oil mixing with e85. He can see how his PCV is allowing oil to get sucked into the intake stream.
I wonder if your jet boat friend is having that same kind of issue.

What injectors does he have? Plenty of shady injector companies out there claiming E85 compatibility.

Yeah he had the issue with black goo, the egt on is turbo were hot and using a lot of oil and he would see the black goo, but he took his covers off the turbo's and lowered the egt and hasn't had the black goo come back since. And yeah he uses a Lucas additive. AGP he says he has Bosch 165's

His tank is also a open atmosphere tank racing tank, it's not a sealed system like a car. So his issue could be coming from the humidity and water being able to get into the tank easily, and that its on the water being a boat.

How often is he using this car? It doesn't matter if all the parts are correct or not if e85 sits in the system like say a weekend car there's gonna be problems if it sits for 3 weeks it can gum up. If its a daily stay on e85 if its a weekend car do the flex and get some gas in before it sits week to week.

I looked into those injectors today and was told those are no good for sustained E85 use. For what it's worth.

Exactly!
No way to run it empty for it stays in the lines even though tank may be empty, you would have to flush lines or run another fuel source through them. this is why a flex fuel setup would be beneficial other than an area with no e85, you can run it almost out of e85 then put a few gallons of 93 in before it sits up for a while. The same theory as the Diesel that runs on used fryer oils except there is no heating or straining the fuel.. Start the truck on diesel warm up the all ready filtered oil switch over to oil before you shut down switch back to diesel.. keeps the fuel line, injector,s and injector pump from gumming up!
