Local Chevy dealer is kncoking anywhere from 8-11K off the MSRP of Silverados, only taking 1500-2400 off of Colorados. Me personally I would have a hard time paying more money for a smaller less capable vehicle when I know that I could get a full size truck for less.

I know I am in the minority there. Maybe once rebates hit the midsize trucks a little more I would change my tune. I really like the Colorado and Canyon, like I said I would have hard time paying more for a smaller less capable truck.
This is true and I had the same thought. Then I realized a few things. Yes, with the rebates you can get "more" truck for the same money, but:

1) I don't need a full size trunk. Especially when you consider the hauling abilities of the Colorado/Canyon with the DuraMax. The current mid-sized trucks are close to the size and power of full size trucks not too many years ago.

2) I don't want to deal with driving something the size the full size trucks. Today's full size trucks are massive compared to what they were just 8-10 years ago. Parking lots and city streets have not gotten any larger though. I can carry 5 and a load in the bed just the same in a mid-size and be able to maneuver it a lot easier.

3) In the long term the saving from the rebates will be lost. Insurance, maintenance, oil changes, tires, and gassing up a full size truck all cost considerable more. Additionally, fuel economy is not as good.

Anything smaller I doubt GM would do BOF. Probably one of the car-based utes.

I personally like the smaller trucks. Less costs, overall, in the long run. I have owned 4 trucks and all of them were in the smaller class.
I have a state-issued Ranger right now and it's easily the worst vehicle I've ever had the misfortune of driving.

I'd love to see something based off the utes over here.

Those utes would work, yeah those ranger trucks..not so much. It would be great to match the Buick encore with one of those utes..I know Buick wouldn't do it

True I agree I don't need a full size either. They are close to the size and power which brings me to my next point

They aren't much smaller than a full size. A colorado Crew Cab is 225" long, a Silverado double Cab is 230" only 5 inches longer, and the full size only 6 inches wider. If I lived in the city yeah that would be a bigger deal. I don't live in the city so that isn't a concern. But the full size is only 5" longer and only 6" wider. That to me isn't a huge difference in size.

3) In the long term the saving from the rebates will be eroded and eliminated. Insurance, maintenance, oil changes, tires, and gassing up a full size truck all cost considerable more. Additionally, fuel economy is not as good.

Possibly, insurance on a full size vs mid size I wouldn't imagine being much different but I haven't checked it out. same with oil changes, I can't see that being much different at all. Tires I can see being more for a full size. the gassing up IMO is still a toss up. The Silverado 4x4 5.3 is rated at 16 and 22, the Colorado is 17 and 24, the F150 with the 2.7 is rated at 18/23 Yeah the colorado has the edge but is it enough to push it to have the full advantage? To me for the price of what I would want not really and I know that I am the minority
And I understand those points. i counter those with my points in red

I just wouldn't be able to wrap my head around it spending more for less.

Different strokes for different folks. That is why these options exist. To me it is just a matter of need, convenience and long term costs. I live in a semi-rural area but do drive in the city regularly. Just for reference, the Silverado take 2.5 quarts more oil and 13 gallons more to fill up.

Just to prompt some more ute conversation, something I found around here a few months ago, and I've had as my desktop background off and on since. Oh, and before anyone gets too excited, it's just a render, not a concept, but oh wouldn't it be nice.

Had some old friends from Australia visiting this weekend. One has had the Holden Colorado with the diesel for 2.5 years now and loves it. Best truck he has owned.

Just buy one with the diesel and hit up King Off Road. You will end up with a better suspension and you can make the truck look however you want. If they do build the ZR2 you are probably talking about a $50k+ MSRP.
