My passport max has been a CHAMP at sniffing out cops. And in regards to the laser comment above, most local cops are still using Ka-band (and in rare instances, K-band) radars, which are easily sniffed out by good detectors. Only the state troopers (NJ) use Laser (also known as Lidar).

Brands to stick to are Beltronics (kinda an entry level escort), Escort, and Valentine. The only brand i really avoid like the plague is Cobra, as the one I had failed me multiple times.

That's so cool how it's hardwired how hard is that? And don't most of them use the same connection so u can unplug if u want a new one?

Always. I have a newer Escort Passport and it has been a life saver. You have to be smart and know how to use it, but if you're in a pack going down the interstate, or if a cop is in a hiding spot, can't really beat it.

It sucks when the laser detector goes off because you know you're already being clocked.

I have a QI45 which is EOL, but there is a similar replacement from Escort. It is a stealth, so those afraid of the police getting angry by a visible radar detector can feel a bit more at ease. Honestly, I speed a lot less frequently with this thing, because it goes off every 5 minutes lol...But I have received 0 tickets in 3 years, compared to the 2 tickets that I received in 1 year after buying the Camaro, 1 for 11 miles and another for 16 miles over the limit. The cops here in South Florida do use laser, but more commonly use K and KA band radar. I could upgrade and add laser shifters to deflect laser if I wanted, but those are finicky and I don't believe they work 100% of the time.

This is not something they should be asking for or using in determining rates or eligibility. Insurance is a highly regulated industry and this is not something they are allowed to use. In fact one use of radar detectors is in some states or areas will emit signals from emergency vehicles, to assist drivers to avoid driving into a first responder assisting in a roadside emergency.

I run a Passport IQ in the Camaro and Passport Max in the Impala. In VT, speed limits change quickly, and for no apparent reason other than for the small towns to generate revenue.
I love the display of the V1, but retired it because it's SO damned huge and the remote display is also HUGE.

It's saved my rear several times. It has to be a good one though. Several have posted what they use and I agree. I have a good Escort. It's picked up Ka 4 to 5 miles away several times on the flat highway.

I run an escort 9500CI and the ALP Laser shifters, and YES, I have been hit by BOTH at the same time, The radar detector gives you so much notice you have plenty of time to slow down. I have the Laser shifters both front and rear, they work great, I have them set to give me 4 seconds to slow down.

I'm looking into getting a Laser jamming rig from either Escort or Blinder to try and defend myself from laser hits. They're expensive, but they would definitely pay for themselves after one or two successful jams

I quit carrying a radar detector about 17-18 years ago, which coincidentally is about the time I got my last ticket. I think the the detector was emboldening me to push the speed limits. That's not to say I always behave, but I've become much more judicious about where/when I indulge my leadfoot.
