Shops in Michigan

Thinking about adding some HP this year. What shops are recommended in Michigan, preferably metro Detroit area? Are there any places local for me like lingenfelter that work with the factory warranty? So far all ive done is a roto-fab intake.

Livernois in Dearborn seems to have a solid reputation. I personally don't have any experience with them so I can't speak on their warranties.

Lingenfelter opened a new shop in Brighton Mi, at least thats what I have been told. Other wise they are just outside of Ft Wayne. I'm sure there are some really good shops in Detroit also, but I like Lingenfelter.

Several shops in the area.
Lingenfelters has a new engineering shop in Wixom.
Livernois in Dearborn Heights
Alternative Auto in Chesterfield
Just to name a few.

Stop over at Detroit5thgen.com and ask the same question and you'll get some great references from our club members.

I live just a few miles from lingenfelters, and I called them up last week. I asked them if their packages (630, and 650HP) would void my GM warranty. They said it would definetly void the factory warranty if they did these upgrades to my car. For some strange reason I thought their packages, if installed by them would keep my factory warranty intact. I know these packages require a tune, maybe thats the issue.

Non of the listed performance shops can help you past 27 HP (CAI) and keep your warranty. You can add headers and get past 50hp but you will need a tune to remove the cel they will throw. Any modification that requires a tune is going to be your word vs. GM if it's engine related unless you have a dealership relationship.

Yes they will void the GM warranty, but sometimes they will have their own warranties to cover their work.

My car came tuned from callaway. Which only produced 458 hp to the wheels but it had a factory warranty. That amount of horsepower get olds kind of quick, I then sent it to Vector motor sports multiple times. Voided the warranty Great guys and very reasonable prices. They won't bend you over backwards. These guys know there stuff. They are in Brighton. My car is there now....but there's no chance on the warranty

There warranties only cover the parts they install. Not anything else that breaks because of what they did to it.

We are definitely in the detroit area, located in Dearborn heights. While no company has upgrades that are compatible with the factory warranty, we do offer packages that include a powertrain warranty as part of the build.

Thanks for the shoutout! As with these cars, often times people are concerned with the factory warranty a little too much. These engines are quite proven, and with the right set of upgrades, you can make some serious power without degrading reliability.

Correct, GM's written letter of the law is that any aftermarket modification has the potential to remove their obligation to warranty it. There is a common misconception that certain companies (and sometimes people include us in this) can modify the car and GM still treat it as if it rolled off out of the factory with those modifications. This is definitely not the case. While going with a world renowned shop like we are can help your chance of GM still working with you, it's still a risk you run no matter who does the work.

Actually, even just a tune can negate the warranty obligations. and a CAI on these cars without a tune does basically nothing as the ECM will learn the change and pull power back out of it after a week or so.

Correct, we have some of our packages that have an optional powertrain warranty, but this is NOT a GM warranty, it's handled by a third party aftermarket company. This is how everyone, and I do mean everyone in the aftermarket industry provides a Powertrain warranty.

Actually, even a callaway doesn't have a GM warranty. if you read the verbiage carefully, it will note that gm doesn't block the warranty, which is true because since it has an aftermarket warranty it never gets submitted to GM in the first place. Same with the builds we do with an aftermarket warranty. You can take your car in for an airbag, and GM will cover it. Take it in for a melted piston, not so much. That gets sent to the third party company who pays the dealer to fix it. but it is not GM doing so.

Basically, when we build a car, we make things simple to understand, being clear about what it does to a warranty. This is why we don't call ours a 3/36. Many companies do this to give the false impression that the OEM warranty is intact, same with calling it a 5/100, or a 5/60, or whatever one they choose. We unfortunately combat this assumption quite often, but we never want to have people choose us for modifications based on assumptions. We prefer the honesty and track record to do the selling for us.

If you'd, like, our Camaro club (Detroit5thGen) has monthly meetings, and our February meeting is at the Sharks club in Waterford on Feb 5th.
The meeting starts at 7:00 (and is very informal) but several of us get there around 5:00 or so.
Stop by and we can talk about it in length.

BTW the meetings rotate between North/South/East/West, and central locations in the Detroit area.

Lingenfelters and Livernois are both sponsors of the club.
