They got too hot... Michelin PSS are great autocross / street tire because they come up to temp quick and stay at temp unless pushed, once pushed (like a road course, see above comment about laguna seca) they get too hot and start chunking like that on the edges.
street use won't heat them to the chunking level, and autocross is usually too short for them to over heat. 2 years, 24k miles, 14 track days (autocross roughly 12-20 runs/day) on my set... but I'm on a square rotating setup.

None taken. I loved them when I first had them, but as they were being heat cycled they seemed to lose their ability to get up to temps for autoX events. I could never get them to generate any heat like I wanted as latter half of the autoX season was happening. I Think they are a great street tire but I don't think they make a good autoX tire, but they are ok as a choice of compromise.

Nearly 200 runs - plus the other use that you mentioned - in a heavy car with a strut front end is pretty damn terrific.
That being said, you might do even better by optimizing the camber and playing with tire pressure. A few less PSI might not feel as good behind the steering wheel, but the additional grip could reduce wear by not allowing as much slip. It really requires some experimentation, though, as it's dependant upon the surface and your driving style.
