In Texas, the first inspection is good for 2 years on a new vehicle. After that its yearly.

In RI a brand new car doesn't need to be inspected until two years pass. However, I can imagine dealers who feel they need to install front plates out of fear that they could get caught delivering a car without plates installed.

I've had my '05 Aveo for over 3 years and it's still not due for inspection until March of next year.

Why would the state make money off inspections? You don't have to pay for it.

YIKES
How I wish WE had those kinds of inspections!!!

It's a $21 fee here, every year for the life of the car.

In NY we have to pay for it. First year and every year thereafter. That, plus the highest taxes in the land (almost) and we're hosed every which way you can imagine!

Your states must not know how to make money!

(Of course we never have a balanced budget, either!)

There's never been a fee to have your car inspected at a state inspection station in NJ. At least not in my lifetime. Only if you want to have it inspected by an independent mechanic.

We don't have 'state inspection stations' that I know of (also from NY). That would be nice.....
We have to go to the dealer, or the mechanic, and they don't get a penny for doing it. (so I'm told)

Unfortunately, Californian cars have to have both front and back plates, but I am so impressed with the way GM incorporated the front plate without spoiling the image of the car (IMO). What I will try to do is take the Front plate down when I get my Camaro and if I ever get caught by the Fuzz ( also known as 5-O or PO-PO), I'll Just act all innocent telling the cop I never knew cars were supposed to have a front plate.

Too bad registration is just that much higher
If I bought a 24,000$ car last month it would have been 220$ to register

yeah, I'm paying 28 dollars per year to keep my saturn registered. Custom plate with my Mitsu eclipse was 48, then 98, then 128 for the last three years I had it before I sold it. Dunno what the extra fees were but it ran great and passed smog every year (had to take it to test-only according to DMV).
