I seriously doubt this is an oil pump issue, unless the OP replaced his old one with the same part numbered one from GM again.

Hope mine doesn't fail. It's like Russian roulette every time I crank my car.

I thought this oil pump failure was from debris caused by machining of the block not a bad pump specifically? If so you would think it should be cleaner in there when the replacement goes in?

So you put the same kind of oil pump back in? Why not upgrade while you were there?

GM will replace the failed pump with the exact same one. For those that build engines, they can confirm most of this is from the lack of proper de-burring the pump during assembly from the supplier of them. Rare to see a Melling or a OEM pump that has been blueprinted have the bypass valve stick and a subsequent failure. This is for ALL LS based GM vehicles, truck versions, Corvettes, etc. And no, a proper catchcan system is impossible to be related to an issue like this that has been a problem with the LS engine since 1997 when the first LS1 was released.

The oil pump in my LS3 failed this past weekend with 9800 miles on the clock. I don't even want the wahoos at GM working on this car after what they did last time nor do I want another one of their junk pumps. Hauled my car to a very competent LS guy about 150 miles away for a melling pump, cam, springs, rods and long tubes.
I've been a GM guy all my life, but they've gotten shady with warranties and just issuing TSB's where there should be recalls in recent years. :( |

Something everyone should take notice of......
The new AC Delco oil filters (have the letter "E" after the numbers) have plastic in them now holding the paper element in place. They used to be all metal inside. Someone I know well (also a Camaro 1LE guy) has a scrap peice of metal LS motor in his shop right now because of it. The plastic piece in the filter broke and the paper was sucked into the oil pump. Metal was used to hold the paper in place before. Needless to say what happened next. He is presently in a battle with GM over "their" oil filter. Here is a picture of the inside of an older "non-E" filter: ![]() Here is the inside of the "NEW" filter with the letter E in the number:
