6 gen SS will be dime a dozen pretty soon. 5 gen ZL1 is a pretty rare rig. I think I have the only one in town. I like that! YMMV....

Peace

Option #2, 2016 Camaro 2SS. It is also black with the two tone white/black interior and black wheels. The car has the magnetic ride control, auto (girlfriend likes that), and NAV.

Thank you for the help! Excited to be back into the Camaro Family!

I owned a 2013 ZL1 for 3.5 years and daily drove it. After 3 years I got the itch for something new. The 2017 ZL1 was announced so I test drove a 2016 SS2 that was fully loaded. (52K for a SS!!! )

The new Camaro is a ton smaller inside than the Gen 5 cars. I was shocked how much tighter it felt inside. I swear the visibility out is worse than the Gen 5.

As for power they claim it is equal but at least compaired to my ZL1 with a CAI there is no way. Butt dyno it felt weak verse my ZL1 and in testing my ZL1 always pulled any Gen 6 SS that tried. (To be fair my ZL1 was always a strong car and trapped high 119 mph on 1/4 mile passes.)

Looks I may be biased but the Gen 5 ZL1 is in my opinion the best looking Camaro built.

When you compare them check trunk space and back seat room. The Gen 6 was so much tighter inside that the Corvette became a better choice for me.

So I bought a Z06.

Gen 5 trunk = 11.3 cu feet
Gen 6 trunk = 9.10 cu feet
C7 Vette = 15 cu feet

BTW The sound of a ZL1 is epic. With a CAI the blower whine mixed with the exhaust is an amazing sound. (Wish my Z06 had some blower whine.)

Gen 5 larger inside.
Gen 5 much better looking outside.
Gen 6 forward vision is horrific...even compared to Gen 5.
A deal breaker to me.

You will not find a more robust car than the Gen5 ZL1. As said in many threads before, you cannot beat the Gen1 lines either.

I had the same situation in May. Waffled back and forth until I got a chance to really look at the ZL1 and Gen 6 and compare. Never even drove the Gen 6 SS. After climbing over the Z inside and out for a while there was no question. I knew the history as it was my brothers car (2012) Cut the check that day. Do I have any regrets................NO!

Similarities: Both cars have Mag Ride...and I'm so sold on that suspension. Even PTM 5 race mode felt more comfortable for street than my 1LE.

Both cars have HUD which is a nice to have tool. I track my car and my 1LE doesn't have it because it's a 1SS.

Pros: ZL1 has more power and will be a special car. In a couple years the 6th Gen SS you buy will be "just another SS." The ZL1 is also an excellent platform to start with if you intended to go mod crazy, can easily surpass 1000HP.

Pros: 6th Gen interior is better and modern. It also appears Chevy solved the LT1 engine problems. I for 1 like the 6th Gen styling...car appears more athletic and agile. Structurally the suspension is better and platform is lighter. Both cars have the same 1/4 mile time surprisingly.

Verdict...I'd pick up a 5th Gen ZL1. It will be cheaper than a 6th Gen 2SS and the Z will perform just as well for a long time.

Personally: I'm waiting til next year to decide between a 2017 1LE or a 5th Gen Z/28

+1

Sat in a '16 2SS a while ago. I liked the interior considerably better than my 5th Gen. I liked the athletic look of the '16. I cant say that I like it better then my Gen 5 but I would say that I could like it better, especially in ZL1 trim (from the pictures). I didn't drive the 2SS but from looking at the numbers, it is very close in performance to the Gen 5 ZL1.

What makes the Gen 5 ZL1 so special is because.................its a ZL1. Like it appears from many others, anyone that knows cars, knows your in a very special car when your rockin a ZL1. I went down to Camp Pendleton this Spring for a reunion, and stopped at Universal Studios on my way back to Idaho. I parked my ZL1 as far from anyone as possible in the parking garage. I came back to the car and there was a group of 4 people taking pictures of it. The land of Super Cars and these guys are taking pictures of my Camaro. Driving/owning this car is just a continuous crazy experience like that. Everywhere you go, people comment on the car. The fact that it is a f'in blast to drive makes it even more special.

An '16 SS is by all accounts an incredible car. However it will never be as exclusive as a Gen 5 ZL1. If these types of things are alluring to you, then get the Gen 5 ZL1. I may get a '17 ZL1 depending on how much disposable income I have at the time because I do like the Gen 6 Camaro. Considering how slow the Gen 6 is currently selling, the ZL1 version could be as a rare as seeing Sasquach in the wild. Unfortunately I think GM is going to blow the top off the price of the new ZL1.....it is just a feeling I have. Good luck in your decision.

Performance is close with both cars but the ZL1 is a classic in the makings.

you can't go wrong with either one, but i am totally blown away by how well the 6th gen performs. people are running high 11s in the 1/4 with just tires. in the optima USCA series, a nearly stock 6th gen SS kept up with one of the most bad ass 5th gen z/28's in the country on the autocross and road course segments. GM did an amazing job with the 6th gen camaro.

I think I'm the only one here who drove a ZL1 and wasn't blown away. Sure it looks a little different. Yes it has a supercharger and sounds awesome. Yes the flat out acceleration is fantastic. Inside the ZL1 looks like every other Gen 5. Not that I cared about the interior. Personally I just didn't like how heavy it felt all the time. I also wasn't impressed with the suspension in track mode. It felt soft and there was too much pitching and rolling when driving it hard.
Having said that if I just wanted a hi powered touring car it's perfect.
I would pick the Gen 6 even though I haven't driven one just for the lighter more crisp feel it has. (or so I've read everywhere)

Drive 'em both. Just make sure you have a salesman that going to let you put the car through some handling tests
