6th Gen IMO. Driven a lot of ZL1s, and got a chance to check out twin turbo 6th gen. Was one of the most amazing cars I've driven, and I've driven a ton. 660rwhp with just the twins bolted on, awesome 8 speed tranny, mag ride, etc. Car was amazing and hands down nicest thing I've driven that didn't' cost >$200k

Is the girlfriend making the payments?
It is your decision as it will be your car in the long term way of looking at it. If you want the latest technology and a new interior and exterior body style then go for the 6 Gen SS. Just remember it still won't be a ZL1, and you will eventually see your "clone" if you live in an area that has a high percentage of Camaro owners..

For me it was a very difficult decision, but I also felt in love with a fully equipped red automatic '14 ZL1 that included the Recaros with only 1100 miles on it for the same $ of the 6th. gen SS. I already have driven for about 2K miles without any issues. My only comment will be to be careful with the gas pedal on temps. below 50 F and its worst in the presence of rain flooded streets while using the stock GY, is a very powerful car that easily could defeat the TC nannies under those driving conditions and those GY tires.
After the 6th. Camaro SS arrived on my local dealer I went to compare both cars side to side. 1. The ZL1 has a more muscle type car look. The 6th. gen SS looks more sporty with a smaller exterior Japanese styled look. 2. Interior of the 6th. Gen. also looks smaller and the rear seats are a joke, impossible to seat there. 3. The front of the 6th gen. looks great, except for those cheap looking plastic hood vents, side looks nice, rear look not so good, it's very simple. 4. Instead I test drove a Stingray Z51 with the same drivetrain & automatic transmission, and it felt very strong and light, I felt almost the same power but in NA. I know that the 6th. Gen Camaro SS is a marvellous piece of engineering with improved suspension, much lighter, has probably better handling feel on a strong N.A. engine that would feel more natural while driving it even at the limit, but to tell you the truth I wouldn't change my ZL1 for a 6th.gen Camaro, for a Stingray Z51 hell yeah, that is an amazing car. The ZL1 is a great looking muscle car with very strong powertrain that would become a classic for sure.

I compared the performance numbers of the '16 Camaro SS VS the 5th. gen ZL1, based on MT, and this is what I found:
Quarter mile: 5th. gen ZL1 12.1 sec @ 117.4 '16 SS 12.4 sec @ 114.6 Winner: 5th. gen ZL1 0-60 MPH ZL1 3.8 '16 SS 4.0 sec Winner: 5th. gen ZL! Brak. 60-0 ZL1 108 ft. '16 SS 104 ft. Winner: 6th. gen SS Lat. accel. Zl1 1.02 g '16 SS 1.00 g Winner: Zl1 Fig. eight ZL1 23.9 sec. @ 0.83 g '16 SS 24.1 sec. @ 0.85 g Winner: Zl1 Very interesting, the winner: is the 5th. gen ZL1 (except for the braking distance), but it looks like a very close battle. Both are great cars.It would be great to see the 6th. gen SS VS the 5th. gen ZL1 lap times at the same track.

There's also the function argument too. What do you plan on doing with her? If you want an awesome touring car...ZL1 it is.
I like to track my car...so Z/28 or new 1LE it is. |

I would go ZL1 hands down. I really do like the way the 6thGen looks, but it is a smaller car. The Camaro is a muscle car, its supposed to be big (I feel if we keep going the way we are, our "muscle" cars are gonna be the size of a Honda S2000 in 20 years). If I wanted a small car I would have gone Vette. Im 6'2" and am not comfortable in a vette or a 6 Gen for that matter.
Now having said that, will it stop me from going 6th Gen ZL1...Hell No. But I would pick 5th ZL1 over 6th SS. And as stated many times, I already pass 4 6th Gen SS's on the way to work everyday not counting 3 of my personal friends who own them (one of which already regrets his choice). I've only seen 3 other Zl1s in the past 2.5 years here. The rarity is nice. Good luck in your choice. Remember, it's YOUR choice. Whatever will make you happy. |

I sat in a Gen6 yesterday just to see if there was a lot of differance..... Not enough to stop me from getting a '17 ZL1 but I won't be getting a SS.
It is smaller though. I'm 6'0 and on the heavier side and it didn't cramp me but you can't recline back like you can in the Gen5. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Thank you to everyone for all of the opinions and insightful comments!
I am 90% sure I will pull the trigger on the 14' ZL1 I described described at the beginning of the thread. That is dependent on getting it at a fair price of course! So about price, what is a "fair" price for a pristine condition? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I payed $42000 for a pristine ZL1 loaded except sun roof 2013 with 4700 miles at the end of the season last year. It was perfect except for the fact that it had after market wheels. Took me a long time to find OEM wheels which cost me $2000. It is very important to me to have a car like the ZL1 completely stock. Hope this helps.

I paid 42K four months ago (Feb 2016) for a flawless 2013 IOM auto with 5k miles, sude package, NO sunroof, exposed carbon and black ten spoke wheels. Could I have gotten a better deal settling for one without a few options I wanted sure but Im glad I waited to find the PERFECT car for me.

This really comes down to price. If you can get into the ZL1 for 40k to 42k and you plan to buy it, that may be the way to go. I would expect most ZL1 owners on this board to say ZL1, after all this is a 5th gen ZL1 board. I've owned two ZL1's. It's a great car. I've driven a 6th gen 2SS with A8 and magnetite ride. I loved it and will have one this month. The performance is similar in stock form. The ZL1 probably edges slightly but it's close enough to call similar. The ZL1 is very easy to mod and is bullet proof. You really can't make a bad decision. Both are excellent cars. The ZL1 at a good price and low mileage might remove a depreciation hit you would take on the new 2SS.

Completely unbiased going in about a month ago. When to my dealer who was having a Nightfall gray 2SS brought in for me to look at. Not long after I got there another customer showed up in an Ashen gray Z and parked next to the SS. No comparison in my opinion. Brought home the SS. The full warranty didn't hurt either. 90% don't know that the 5th gen Z is anything but a Camaro. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the Z, but I think the 6th gen SS is a better buy.
