I can't remember if the gel or the clear was special in the hood insert.

Clear Coat
Quote:
From the G5 Nathan Moreno vendor thread, this is what I was told about the Seibon pieces: Quote: No, there is no clear coat and the gel offer no UV protection. This is the same reason the OEM clear coat the CF parts. We recommend the parts get clear coated. These are the words from my painter who's doing our car for SEMA. "Don't cheapen out and just go with the guy that gives the lowest quote. There cheap clear ($100 per gallon) that has no UV projection. Confirm the clear being use does have it. When you pour cheap clear into a glass cup, it will look transparent. When you pour quality clear with UV protection, it will have a slight yellow tint, that’s the UV protection". What is the warranty against color fading? A lot of folks get the part and slap them on because they look really nice out of the box and forget to get them clear coated. But if they get them clear coated, it gives them 100% more depth. It's just amazing how much more they pop! Over time, one year or so, the sun will beat up on them and they will turn yellow. That's the guarantee. |

"The clear finish on carbon fiber products is affected by solar radiation, moisture, chemicals, oxygen, ozone, temperature, abrasion, internal and external stress, and pigment fading. Out of all these, the following factors which are all present in outdoor weathering, are the most important to coating degradation: moisture, elevated or lowered temperatures, oxidation and UV radiation. Our clear finish contains UV inhibitors, however, It is highly recommended to use an automotive clear with UV inhibitors professionally applied to the carbon fiber part to prolong the life and finish of the product, especially if the car is parked or stored outside for long periods of time." To which I replied and said the car is garaged most of its life and they replied saying: "You should be ok based on a car stored in the garage 90% of the time. What part of the country do you live?" I said Pittsburgh, PA and they said: "You should be fine. Don’t forget to share some photos when you get your spoiler installed!" Seems like as long as the car isn't out in the weather all year round it should be fine... He stated the gel coat DOES have UV protection so I'm torn now... I hate paying people for work like this because I ALWAYS come out disappointed in the end. Any guesses on cost to get a spoiler clear coated and have it look GOOD? |

I have a CF spoiler I bought from Nathan Moreno a while back and the coating on the spoiler is completely faded and on some parts just gone and is just bare CF. I wish they had stated that it needed a UV clear coat to protect it from the sun.

That sucks, but I'm glad to hear that there is definitely a need.

After looking the spoiler that I got over really well I noticed a lot of imperfections like the ones you have pictured.. They don't catch my finger nail so they appear to be bubbles IN the gel coat or early delamination. I have contacted the place I purchased it from and they want pictures of the defects and these things are really hard to capture on camera. There is also one of the pictures that shows a solid black LINE that goes across the top of the spoiler where there is NO carbon fiber... really weird... Every picture here is a DIFFERENT defect... What do you guys think of this?

That's a bad one. My first one had one small imperfection but not as noticeable as yours!

That's kind of what I figured, that isn't the worst part though. The white spots in the actual gel coat are what looks like crap. I contacted the place I bought it from and they are going to contact Anderson Composites so hopefully this can get settled in a timely manner.
