No matter how you look at it or which Gen you like better, Camaro sales are way down. That speaks volumes by itself.

Why is that? Mustang sales are up in 2016. Growing up in the 70s and 80s Camaro was king while Mustang was not so popular. Chevy needs to up their game, build a better ride and surpass the Mustang once and for all.

It's lack of marketing. Ford promoted the new Mustang for months before it's release - they even put one on top of the Empire State Building & were on all the news programs. Only people who follow the Camaro are aware there's a new model.

This is true, and the reason I feel Chevrolet doesn't market the Camaro hard is because they have a belief that it is like their Corvette. They don't realize that the Camaro has actual domestic competition, unlike the Corvette. They figure they'll sell every one like the Corvette, despite the only time a Corvette is built is when its sold.

90% of people buy these cars based on how they look. If sales are down it speaks volumes on the overall design and staying power of the 6th Generation. I would love one based on the performance upgrades which I appreciate, but the appearance is what sells, hence they are now putting four cylinder engines in these cars. I see ten lesser model Mustangs to every one 5.0 I see, this just tells you people are opting for convenience, style, and fuel economy over straight performance.
If your wife gains a bunch of weight after the wedding you don't divorce her, you just pay less attention to her. The 5th Generation was the wedding, 7 years later she just gained a little weight on the style side of course. http://www.torquenews.com/106/why-is...selling-better

In my opinion the characteristics of the 5th Gen appealed to different people than the 6th gen will. I bought the 5th gen for my wife because she had a `79 when we were dating, and once we were done with mini-vans and kids, I wanted her to have one again. We both favor the regular radio for it's retro dial look. We both don't like the look of the 6th Gens, for the same reason someone who is considering a Hyundai Genesis would rather have a 6th Gen than a 5th. Both Gens have a similar profile, but the front and rear are very Euro-panese. I'm not sure why but for some reason we both like the 2009 and 2017 Mustang but not the versions in-between. Maybe because the back of the 2017 looks wider and lower like a Camaro? If I were to buy new, I would probably go with the 2017 Mustang over the 6th Gen Camaro.

That's because in the '70s & 80's the Mustang was complete crap. Remember the Mustang II?

Well, the styling is subjective. Me, I like it. I know that it has lost some of that "muscle car" look, but really, that has a lot to do with it not really being a "muscle car" anymore.
What I really do like about the Gen 6 is that, in terms of all around performance, and design as well, the Camaro is as close to the current Corvette as it has ever been. Considering you can get into an SS for almost 20 grand less than the Corvette, (depending on options) that's still a pretty good deal. Why the slump in sales? Y'all could be right about the looks, who knows why people don't buy a particular car? Most people don't talk about that outside of a focused forum like this. Some has to do with no fleet/rental sales I'm sure. Some may be Chevy shot themselves in the foot with the 20% deal just before the release, took potential buyers out of the market if they just bought a new '15. Then it may be the fact that they intro's the 1LE and ZL1 so soon. Perhaps there are more people waiting on those cars as opposed to buying the base SS right now. |
