Hi All,
I'm new to the site just bought my 2012 ZL1 in August and had a question about whats the best programmer on the market for mods. such as improved throttle response and the ability to adjust the rev limiter. I know theirs a lot of junk out there so I figured you all could help me avoid the crap! Thanks again, ![]() Ron |

These aren't diesel trucks
A programmer doesn't really exist in the sense that you're thinking. What we do with ZL1s is get a "Tune". Now, there's really no point in getting a tune that costs 500$ when you do no other modifications to the car, it's not going to improve that much. Instead of giving you a ton of mod suggestions or stuff like that, let us know if you have a HP goal or a standard you'd like to mod to. Such as, basic bolt ons (Gentle on the car, around 540-600 rwhp), full bolt ons (A little more in depth, more like 600-640 rwhp), FBO and Cam (660-730 rwhp) and then much more from there. So let us know your goals if you have any. If you don't plan to do any mods, then I wouldn't bother getting the car tuned. You're not going to improve throttle response vastly, and the rev limiter is good where it's at .

As far as Exhaust, the stock NPP (Cat-back) is actually just as good as any aftermarket exhaust up until super high HP, unless you want more sound. Buy Headers and No Cats or high flow cats and pull the F8 exhaust fuse in the trunk that opens the dual mode all the time, you'll love the sound. For Headers, there's plenty to choose from. Most preferred would probably be kooks and American Racing headers. Intake, I'd only buy the Roto-Fab one for the ZL1. Tune you can rely on hundreds of shops to do. Although Livernois is an awesome choice, one of the best shops in the country IMO. They do SEMA quality stuff all the time, can't go wrong. What would happen is you would have the mods installed/install them yourself, then you would buy their MyCal tuner from their website, and then go through the process of loading the stock tune, emailing them, they email you a new tune, you plug back into the car and load it etc. (May be missing a few steps). |

Thanks to " Can'tHave2MuchHP" for throwing in kind words. Here is a basic lowdown on the process -ships as reader -you sign for it from Fed Ex man -go out to car and plug in, follow prompts/instructions -install program on you cpu (pc only NO MAC) -update info onto that program -send email request for tunes -await email that tunes are ready -update device -go to car and install most are satisfied with our proven tunes as delivered. Of course you have the option to request tweaks or changes beyond the original file to custom tailor it to your specific needs. They are not any options other than purchasing more mods and tuning for those. Our website has some info and we have store hours as well. 9-6M-F EST 9-1 Sat .EST We try to be available for assistance. www.livernoismotorsports.com 313-561-5500 various forums |

We can tune up that throttle lag for ya. As far as the limiter goes the tuner/calibrator will only adjust that based off of mods and if it is safe. We have tons of packages for that platform, mild to wild We were the first to put a ZL1 in the 9's! Headers and connections are a good choice but choosing the incorrect ones could be a 25 rwhp mistake... so choose your parts carefully. We have the recipes for those cars that are proven and still drive great. I would not tinker with the gears unless you are building a dedicated 1/8 mile drag car. When you start making more power the gear doesn't seem as important. It's not a 300 hp car we are trying to make run like it has big power like the days of past. |

So the ZL1 has what's called a dual mode exhaust, abbreviated part number is NPP which is what everybody uses to refer to it. Dual mode exhaust has an active baffle in the back to open and close either side of the muffler. When the car is stock on the ZL1, the baffle is open (loud mode) when the car is at Idle, then it closes when you're driving under 3500 RPMs, but if you accelerate/rev to above 3500, the baffles open up and the car gets much louder. Pulling the fuse gets rid of the open and close mechanic and is open all the time. I'd say that 90% of the modded ZL1s still have the stock NPP exhaust with the fuse pulled, with or without headers/cats. F8 exhaust fuse pull is easy to do, it's located in the trunk of the car under the carpet on the passenger side. Here's the thread on it: http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=268970 |
