Replaced mine yesterday with 23,000 miles on the car. It was pretty bad.

My 2014 was delivered new with a streaked paper element that has greyish and black streaks all over the element. Looked old but that was the way the paper was manufactured, maybe some kind of treatment. Noticed that at the time I put screens on the under-side of the two cowl vents near the windshield wipers (I dislike pine needles and leaf debris falling down in to the vents - and that screening stops it).
Anyway, couple times now I have taken the air compressor and dusted off the paper filter by reversing the air flow. Element still looks like the day it was delivered.

I swap mine out every spring to help combat the pollen (bad allergies).

Wix filters, from Amazon. Not expensive and a piece of cake to do.

Super easy to do. , 9$ filter from AutoZone. Car is 7 years old. Only 40k and I was surprised by the amount of dirt on the filter
