I understand wanting to leave headroom. The stealthbox is rated at 600 watts 2 ohm... Is it typical to go double the rated speaker wattage?

Im a little out of my element but I have a little knowledge on audio, very little that is. I can't speak for the person you were asking this question, but I would guess the answer would be something like: "better to have the extra power and not need it, than to need the extra power and not have it" I could be wrong. The person you asked might have different motivations, so I digress. They can answer for themselves.

Myself, I've found alot of the sound comes from the box itself. I've built many boxes for boom boom systems and have had decent results with a ported/baffled style, a design that I was taught by a guy who does Db drags.

Imo, When the box is built right / to spec, not alot of wattage is needed, even for "concert quality" sound. But with anything in life, different strokes for different folks. I am curious to the answer myself, as I have found higher wattage sometimes ONLY means more $ spent. I suppose if $ is no object, the motivations are null.

Cheers.

I road trip a bit...are you worried about throwing a travel bag in the trunk and listening to the stereo when traveling with your daughter?

My priorities were 1)sound 2)footprint and keeping as much usable space..... All the while smacking myself in the head and telling myself its a convertible, it will never sound as nice as the same equipment in a coupe, so don't blow the bank knowing that diminishing returns will hit much quicker.

Just curious as to what went through your head?
Sorry for the delayed reply; haven't been monitoring forum in a while.

They are 600 watt RMS / 1200 watt peak so I went with the large amp. Obviously I don't peak the system out but figured I would go big so I am not running my amp at peak performance all of the time as I likely would be with a 600 watt amp. I figured a large amp not used at full capacity would dissipate heat better in the small space in Arizona heat than a amp running at near full capacity often. Also what the other guy said: "better to have the extra power and not need it, than to need the extra power and not have it." The price difference between the 600 and 1200 amps was like $150. When you are at the $1,000 price point already, that's small potatoes.

I intend on having a custom metal rack made out of square tube to install over the amps to be able to put a couple small bags in the truck. And obviously not run system too hard when bags are above. Also use unoccupied space up front for bags, etc.
