Those muscles once they get weak or hurt shut down on you even though you stay active you need specific exercises to restart them. My advice find a good specialist to who can recommend some exercises you can do at home daily. Maybe takes 15 mins of my day a few times a week. Hell pm me and I would email you what I have. Changed my life.
This!! Before you consider surgery, give this a try. Like so many others (I'm 55) who have been and still are active and fit, I have lower back issues. Once I started understanding that for a lot of the pain and stiffness, it was directly tied to failing to stretch hamstrings and glutes properly. Now I also have sciatic nerve issues, so it's not a cure all, but work on stretching and strengthening your core, and you will likely see a big improvement!

Believe me or don't believe me when I tell you this. I ignored this advice for too long from a friend until I was suffering so much I couldn't stand it anymore. Pain meds weren't cutting it and I thought was going to need surgery or worse. It was horrible beyond words.

I had back pain for years. Sometimes to the point it put me in bed for days up to a week and I needed to use a walker to get to the bathroom. I tried all the medications, chiropractors, TENS, ointments and ceremonial voodoo blood sacrificial moonlight dances. Nothing worked.

Then a friend turned me onto an inversion board and it has been a life changer.

The science is actually very simple. It decompressed all those vertebrae and allows all your nerves and bones and your spine and all that jelly stuff to simply realign and get everything back in place where it's supposed to be. You can hear the cracking of your spine expanding and you can actually feel the relief of everything falling back into place.

I use it regularly, a few times a week, turning back and forth while hanging two or three times, letting gravity do its thing. Since I've owned this board I haven't had any back pain while sleeping or driving and regular activity is easier and I have much less worry about back pain and normal activity doesn't bother my back at all.

I honestly don't know what else to say to convince people of this. But what have you got to lose?

Edit: in addition to the other stuff mentioned like strengthening muscles and yoga.... all that stuff is right on the money also!

So, I just want to update this, since this thread has been updated...

If and when you have surgery or fusion of your spine, you have just made that weak point (of the chain per se) the strongest point. Now, the next level up will become the weak point... and this will just continue. My L5/L4 has now become my week point... had a new MRI done a little over a month ago, boy did that show some interesting info.

I'm supposed to go in for facet injections in a couple weeks. But, I just had three stents put in Thursday, so I don't know if they'll have to reschedule or not.

Once you have surgery, it just opens you up (literally) to all kinds of things. Remember this... a orthopedic surgeon is there to do one thing, surgery. If the only option out of his/her mouth is surgery, walk! You should do/try everything before surgery... PT, epidural, facet injections, RF ablation, ANYTHING and EVERYTHING!

Not trying to be a Debbie Downer... but once you have surgery, there is no turning back... pun intended.

I drove from the camaro5 fest Indy 1 back to Ct. No back problem but almost fell asleep
several times. Camaro seats are as comfortable as any car imo but that was scary. I'm
not stupid, stopped at 4 hotels off I-84 but no rooms and just try to sleep in a 5th gen.

I know as we age...shit happens. I drove across the country twice on Route 66 in 2010 & 2012. Now im 55, in my second battle with cancer and suddenly the Camaro is almost impossible to get comfortable in. But, alas, we find ways to make do for the love of our automobiles.

You would be surprised what engineers don't think about when building cars, my work car (2008) Mazda 6 has very comfy seats, and footwell lights, door lights and a lazier beam for a map light in the front and rear of the car. So why no footwell lights in the Camaro or for, a car worth twice as much, who knows designers can be weird
