I get most of my files from Thingiverse then import them into Tinkercad and modify them for my needs. I have slso designed some of my own in Tinkercad. Its a simple program with premade shapes you can manipulate to make many things.

I made this robot from Lost in space today all in one piece, then i took the file and made it sectional in tinkercad and now printing it larger. The origional came out about 3" tall, this one will be over 8" tall when done. On my machine the larger you make something the better it turns out.

Any of you use that digitizer scanner? Does it even turn out accurate?

I was thinking about getting one but from what I have seen its not worth it for the price yet. Give them a couple more years and both printers and scanners should be much better.

I also 3d print. I have an ultimaker2 extended. I've had it since may and use it daily. I have just started doing my own modeling. Til now, i have mostly used thingiverse, youmagine, and a cad forum.
There is actually an app you can use to make your phone into a 3d scanner. A lot of people use xbox camera to turn into a scanner. I actually have one sitting in my closet just waiting for me to get off my ass and do it. The thing is though that i haven't hadvthe need. I have found everything I've needed to print online. |

All you really need to do a 3d scan is a camera and one of those cheap laser levels from home depot. Put your work-piece on a rotating platform with the vertical laser line pointing at it from 45 degrees from the camera. Dim the lights in the room and take pictures while rotating the platform one degree at a time. You now have 360 pictures with a red line down the side of each one in the profile shape of the object in X,Y. You get the Z by combining the photos after being converted to an excel spreadsheet. There's also tons of free utilities that do this automatically.

I saw the 3D printed cars at the plastics expo in Orlando back in February. One of them was rough. Literally. The other was a very refined AC Cobra that I would drive, although not on the street. This tech is emerging very quickly. I've been using 3D printing since 1994. We have several at work that we use for packaging. I keep thinking about parts I want to make, but never seem to have the time to design them or print for that matter. Our machines are very close tolerance polyjets and are busy 24/7. We make about 10k pieces a year. It's insane how far it's come since the early days. I suppose auto customizers will start to use this tech if they haven't already. Imagine the shapes we could do. And if it breaks, print another.

Don’t bash new members, we all started somewhere with little experience. Criticizing a new member is a good way to run them off. Be nice.
Besides may be a good time to revive this with new posts. My 2 3d printers and a GPS mount I made for my Van.

A 3D printed replacement for the center speaker grill to hold a GPS unit would be cool.

Nice work. Cool angry bird. haha
Tech is amazing. I watched a 3D bio-printer in action, building an artery from someone's DNA before. They said they have bio-printed brains from DNA and are also "learning" how to load data into the "New" brain. No BS. Maybe I need a new brain install with it tuned to make me think my car is super fast so I quit spending money. |
