its the AFM lifters

only solution is a DOD/AFM delete kit to replace the AFM lifters with LS7 ones. and if your willing to do that just to get rid of the ticking, you might as well install a cam and port your heads while there off!

As they said...follow the thread on lifter noise but here is another CLUE: Headers...
Just check to make sure your headers didn't spit a gasket. More than one time in my old racing days header bolts backed out and caused the header to "pop" just like your are describing. It was particularly noticeable when the engine was cold. As the head warmed up and the header warmed up they closed the gap. But more likely than not it is the lifter(s).

I've had mine for 17 months and mine does it most of the time and they tell me it's normal. I really don't like it myself.

Not only does mine do it....has from the start, but my 4th gen did it too. It is the lifters ticking, and it's normal.

I stopped using Royal Purple in my cars, the 2 that had it started "using" oil and never had previously. Reinstalled Mobil 1, 5W30 EP & never had any further problems.

i just changed my oil after 1k with mobile 1 v6 and i got it after start up but only when its cold otherwise its only when i first start up the car but its always cold in ny now.

My L99 ticks-- I timed it-- 20 seconds noisy-- 30 seconds better-- 1-2 min quiet... I called service manager, and made appointment to see him... He said there was a TSB and he would look for a updated one... He said e.g. people who use remote start often would never hear it lol He said he would do whatever it took to make me happy! He claims the car will not 'hurt" itself... I have a 01 6.0L that ticks and clatters and runs like champ.. and a 07 5.3 that runs quiet

Well that souns like what my problem is. I think that I will take it in and have the dealer take a look at it. I would rather not have a problem. Like I said I am new to Camaros but you want to know anything about Jeeps, I'm your man!

Some customers may comment on an engine valve lifter tick noise that occurs after the engine has been shut off for at least two hours. The tick noise may last from two seconds to ten minutes.

This condition may be caused by any of the following:

• Aerated oil in the valve lifter body, resulting in the valve lifter being unable to purge the air quickly.

• A low engine oil level or incorrect oil viscosity.
• Dirty or contaminated oil.
• A low internal valve lifter oil reservoir level.
• Debris in the valve lifter.
• A high valve lifter leak down rate.

If the SI diagnostics do not isolate the cause of this valve lifter tick noise and normal oil pressure is noted during the concern, perform the following steps:

1. <LI type=1>Inspect the engine oil condition and level. Refer to Owner Manual > Service and Appearance Care > Checking Things Under the Hood > Description and Operation > Engine Oil in SI.
   ⇒If the engine oil is more than one quart low, an incorrect oil viscosity is being used or if poor quality/contamination is observed, change the oil and filter.

   Note: Allow at least a two hour soak time between engine OFF and start up when evaluating the tick noise.
2. Start the engine and evaluate the valve lifter tick noise.
   ⇒If the valve lifter tick noise is still present, replace all 16 valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement in SI.

I took mine in and had the lifters replaced at my dealer and it sounds great now!

That does help, but the only question I have is it say it applies to the V8 model and I have the V6.

well update on this. took it to the dealer today and showed him the tick, I was told that it is normal. It sucks but that is the way it is.

My car does the same thing....kinda worries me! only does it cold, maybe I should change oil and see if problem persists?
